Andy was diagnosed with a form of acute Leukemia (AML) about one month ago. After a short but courageous battle, he passed away at about 2:00 AM Sunday, Oct. 20, 2013.
Andy and his wife Gail lived for years in Salida, Colorado, a beautiful mountain community a few hours west of Colorado Springs. I visited them there about 10 years ago. They established a private school in town that they ran for years and were still operating at the time of Andy's passing. Andy got his PhD in English from the University of Illinois. They raised their three (now adult) children in Salida.
So very sorry to hear this...Andy and I dated our senior year and went to graduation together. I was tryig to reach him to catch up and see if he was planning on attending our reunion...now I know why I couldn't connect. My deepest sympathy goes out to his family....
Andrew Jacob Kahan, 68, of Salida died Oct. 20, 2013, in Denver surrounded by family.
He was born Oct. 15, 1945, in Chicago, Ill., to Irving and Belle Kahan.
Although he earned a doctorate from the University of Illinois in English literature and taught undergraduate classes there and elsewhere, he dedicated his professional life to early childhood education.
He helped found and operate a nonprofit school, Strawberry Door in Salida, where he served both as a teacher and executive director for nearly 40 years.
Until the sudden onset of his illness, Mr. Kahan continued to enjoy biking and other outdoor activities that had drawn him and his wife to Colorado in 1972.
Survivors include his best friend and wife of 43 years, Gail Kahan; daughters, Tani Sandler and Jolie Kahan; son, Ari Kahan; son-in-law, Rich Sandler; and 5-year-old granddaughter, Cleo Sandler.
A celebration of his life will be held later. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society at lls.org.
In a class of 1200, I never knew Andy Kahan, but I wish I had. He who earned a PhD in English, founded a preschool, lived and played in Colorado, and was a true family man would have been a soul brother of mine. A life well lived--RIP!
I knew Andy well in our early years. He lived up the street from me in Glencoe and we frequently held Cub Scout meetings at his home. He was a quiet and sincere person. We both took cub scouts far too seriously.
