I just found this notice while researching our classmate Martha Kuphal. Sue Giallombardo Walker
Martha Jean Kuphal was a beautiful, intelligent and talented young woman. She was studying Russian in college and was always an honor student. She was the 3rd of 4 children of her parents, Jean and Edward Kuphal. When she was only 19 years old, Martha was killed in the crash of United Airlines Flight 389, which crashed into Lake Michigan only about 30 miles from its final destination of O'Hare Airport. All 30 of the passengers on the New York to Chicago flight perished. She was survived by her brother Edward her sister Nancy and sister Elizabeth and their families. She was also survived by her parents, Edward and Jean, her grandmother Ida Mae Kuphal Fanning, numerous aunts and uncles and cousins all of whom miss her very much.

Martha Kuphal was an energetic, warm and enthusiastic activist in NT's American Field Service program. She had a wonderful, 'fizzy' personality and she brought sparkle and fun to any meeting or conversation. She had a twinkle in her eye and a dimple(s) when she smiled.
She and I went out to the U. of Washington in Seattle; (I believe Richard Mieno did, too, though I didn't know him nor learn why he chose to go there). Martha had a specific focus -- to study Russian -- that made UW an appropriate choice. I wanted a geographical adventure, and I got it, extensive backpacking in the Cascades and Olympic Peninsula. Martha lived in the Russia House at UW, and I envied her having a chosen a field of study. But in the summer of 1964, Martha was killed when returning on a 727 that fell into Lake Michigan. I think with her energy and capability and talent as a communicator she would have had an outstanding career, perhaps with the State Dept. as a foreign service officer.
