Posted Tuesday, September 8, 2009 09:56 AM

Yes, Melissa Gunter was the owner of last week's will - any comments Melissa?

So here we go for this week.  Please join in the fun and post your guess.

I, ______________, being of the 950 Country Club 10, 11, 12 and body, do hereby bequeath the following:  West Virginia Lottery tickets, the sandwich I left at home an an unabridged collection of Odie's tall tales to Louie; some Jolt, a beeg beeg chain, and a combination fishin' rod-shotgun to Lamar; My Beta Club card, graduation from the 11th grade, and endless job opportunites at Country Cookin' to Lowie: a button to Lawrence; a notebook to mark up to Lynn; total anarchy and nuclear numchucks to Jedi Knight; right-wing death squads and Wilson's chili beans and nanner pudding to Olive Drab Babb: Hardee's sausage biscuits and dragon sandwiches to M.R.; a 429 to Chico; a dram school to A.M.: a wild boat to Nonbody; a tank to R.W.: Hi-techs to B. Mckee: Sharpei Puppies, Gourmet food, briefcases, the rat race, and each other to BSHR; and the end of the world to everyone who believed it.

Ok - if this one is yours, wait until next Tuesday to make any comments.  Everyone else - take your best guess.

Definitely Greg "Brainy" McNair.  Didn't even get past the first line before I knew it was him.

If not Greg, then Dan Jensen.  Couldn't be Eddie - he is Lamar in this conversation.  The issue with this being Dan is 950 Club is reference to SAT score.  950 is way too low for Dan.

I was the recipient of the "button" in this will. Must be referring to that "Mondale/Ferraro '84" button. Was also involved in acquiring those West Virginia lottery tickets.

Oh man.  I'm really stumped now.  I was sure it was you, Greg!

I'm going to guess again - I'm guessing it's Eddie.

Hi Guys-

I must admit that I am indeed the author of this will. Even though it seemed eerily familiar, I was convinced that it was Dan's. A brief chat with him this morning, however, straightened me out.

So, here are a few of the actors:

  • The 950 Country Club refers to an incident in which several among us were threatened with not graduating for inserting the "690 Club" into our official senior yearbook bios. You'll see it again.
  • Louie, Lowie, Lamar, and Lawrence are Dan, Tom Stetler, Ed, and Jason Horne, respectively. I goofed up the earlier "Lawrence" reference because that's my middle name.
  • Lynn was Rhonda Wood, but we're trying to understand the gift of a notebook. (See below.)
  • Jedi Knight is David Kranyck.
  • Olive Drab Babb is self-explanatory.
  • M.R. must be Missy Robinson, with whom I'd love to be back in touch.
  • "Chico" is Dan Perkins.
  • I cannot place who A.M. is, though the "dram" might be a typo for "drama." The "A" might be Andy Bowyer? Maybe it was my sister.
  • "Nonbody" was a typo in the original publication. It should read "Nobody" and was Mike Lawrence. It's how we greeted each other.
  • B. McKee was Bill McKee, the head photographer for The News Messenger, where I was working.
  • R.W. is Ricky White.

Some passages really made me smile, particularly Odie's Tall Tales. I can still remember Mike Babb reading them on the bleachers during gym class laughing so hard that it seemed that his sides would split. "West Virginia Lottery Tickets" refers to one notable lunch period when Dan and I drove to and from West Virginia during class to buy lottery tickets because, well, you could. We managed to get there and back without anyone realizing that we were gone. 429 was the size, in cubic inches, of the engine of my canary (read "banana") yellow car. The end of the world must have been some date that occurred during our high school years that some group had set for the world to end -- long forgotten to me now. Working in Times Square for years, I certainly heard many other possibilities for this event.

I hope that Ed still has that combination fishin' rod-shotgun somewhere packed away in his garage.

Rhonda-

Is your middle name "Lynn?" I'm suspecting that she is you!

Greg,

My middle name is Lynn.  I thought maybe that was me.

Do you remember who the R.W. is that you left a tank to?  At first I was thinking that could be me.

Rhonda-

I had a feeling that "Lynn" was you. Do you remember why I would have given you a notebook to mark up? I think that "R.W." was Ricky White. He had recently gone to a a military recruitment event in Richmond (as I remember) and had signed up to drive a tank. He subsequently changed his mind and was trying to figure out how to get out of the gig. So, I guess that that makes sense. More likely than my giving you a tank, anyway, unless you needed one to drive out Mudpike!

Anyway, good to have gotten to the bottom of that mystery. I'll update the list.

-Greg

You are probably right about the R.W.  I was thinking that could have been me because my boyfriend was Frank "The Tank"...

I remember sitting next to you in class (Gov't maybe?).  I don't remember marking on your notebook, but it is possible.  I know we had fun talking and picking on each other.

THAT'S IT! You would sit next to me and mark all over my notebook while Mike Lawrence sat behind us making snide remarks. It all fits together!

Well, I'll have to send you a notebook one of these days.

Loved the "Frank the Tank" story. Maybe Ricky will join one of these days and fill in the rest.
