Since Graduation... Posted Tuesday, September 15, 2009 01:00 PM Since Graduation I have moved a few places, but all within California. Others I know have moved outside the U.S. and they probably have had better adventures than I. However I have lived in the Bay Area, Lake Tahoe, San Diego county, and have found my home here in La Mesa. My wife and I thought of moving to Las Vegas, but we would have missed the beaches and family far too much. |

1990-1991: Fort Jackson, South Carolina for some BOOT CAMP, Huah!
1991: Fort Sill, Oklahoma for Advanced Training (AIT) where you learn your job... My buddy from boot camp is from Norman so I had an opportunity to visit there towards the end of training.
1991 - 1993: Rheinland Kaserne, Ettlingen, Germany with the HQ 44th Signal Battalion. While serving in Germany, I had the opportunity to see the German countryside. Ettlingen is near Bavaria between Stuttgart and Manheim. While there, I traveled to Paris, France and Salzburg Austria and many towns throughout Germany (Numberg, Weissbaden, Frankfurt, Munich, etc.).
1993 - 1997: Fort Lewis, Washington w/ 555th Engineer Group. While serving in the Great Northwest, I traveled to Seattle frequently, lived in Kent and Puyallup before moving on base. About the only thing in Washington state I did not like was our annual training in Yakima. That place is nothing but a desert of sage brush and driving through sage brush in a hummer is not fun. I am apparently allergic to sage brush and I would suffer from the worst bouts of sinus and migraine headaches but I was a soldier so no whining was allowed J
1997 – Present: Katy, Texas working for the corporate man in Houston, attempting to raise boys with morals and values while remaining sane all at the same time. J

RE: Since Graduation... Posted Wednesday, September 16, 2009 12:18 AM What's not to like about Yakima? It's the Palm Springs of Washington, you know! (Do you know that story? Yes? Well, I'm telling it anyway!) So this guy who lives in Yakima (used car salesman, I believe) decided that Yakima needed something. So he puts up a big ol' sign that says something like "Welcome to Yakima....the Palm Springs of Washington!" If you've ever driven past this sign (because why would anybody stop?), you know how funny this is. Just after the sign, you start seeing things like lumber yards... I don't know why anybody would want to spend their spring breaks in the real Palm Springs, when they can just go to Yakima! (We live in Richland, which is just over an hour away from Yakima. Yes, feel sorry for me--we have lots of sagebrush here, too, and almost EVERYBODY is nasty allergic to it.) |

Sorry for the delay, things get kind of haywire in my life from time to time. I never heard that story before so I googled it and it's a hilarious story and GOOD for him. I still don't like Yakima though... :o) |

Travel, huh? I think I win this Updates: Post-Berkeley: 1994-1996, graduate work in Agricultural Economics at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (UIUC). Masters received 1996. 1996-1997: Aborted attempt at a Ph.D. in Agricultural Economics at Cornell. Burned out by May. Very sad. Decide to go work and get married instead. 1997-2002: Working in Washington, DC (international organization and U.S. Gov't). Groovy time, some travel for work (Viet Nam, Japan, Australia, Chile, Argentina) and fun (South Africa/Namibia/Canada/Thailand). Get urge to go back to school though. 2002-2005. Finish up Ph.D. at UIUC, with time for travel to Argentina/Uruguay (fieldwork), Madagascar/Cambodia/Viet Nam (consulting), and Turkey (vacation). 2005-2006: Take economist position in New Delhi, India and travel starts to add up (Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Kenya, Mauritius, Dubai). Great (maybe too much) fun in Delhi, but position super boring. Move on to ... 2006-2008 ... Nairobi, Kenya and really travel a bit too much now for work (Indonesia, Botswana, back to South Africa, Ethiopia, etc etc.). Fun time in Nairobi -- San Diego-like weather, but sadly 'Escape-from-New-York' like crime. Since 2008, I have been in Cairo at the American University in Cairo, but moving on from last five years of contract gigs to a full-time, permanent gov't post in Norway starting early 2010. |
