Steve Grant died in a car accident not long after graduation, probably in 1964. He was in his first year at Monterey Institute of Foreign Studies majoring in Russian studies. I remember that he was searching around for what to do with his life and eventually wound up there, and it made all the difference for him to have a goal and a direction. I was at San Diego State at the time and attended his funeral. It was so sad to lose a friend, and even sadder to realize that he had so much potential that was cut off much too early. He was a bit of a loner in high school but was probably my first friend at Hilltop when I arrived from New York at the beginning of my senior year. I recall that we once crashed a fancy party in Bonita pretending to be musicians. We even sang Kingston Trio songs accompanied by Steve's ukelele. We quickly realized that we didn't know all the words and beat a hasty retreat before we could get caught.
