Shayne Maree Schuller (Morgan Sledge)

Hi Terry

I don't recall that speed bump incident, but, if accurate, think it was a case of mistaken identity That wasn't me, but hormones behind the wheel. Sounds like a scene from "Rebel Without A Clue" or "The Young and the Reckless".

Whoever that woman in the Hilltop cheerleader outfit was, her car was faster than mine. I have another Shayne moment to report. After Chula Vista beat us on a long pass in the final moments of a football game we should have won, Shayne met me in the middle of the football field and gave me a much needed hug. That was a very bitter defeat that still lingers but Shayne was there to console me. School spirit never fades.

Is that Tom Bump of Halsey? Pleasant surprise.

Can't wait for Karen Brixius, Suzanne Phillips and (class of 64) Bobby Brown to show up here. I'm pretty sure KB never will having spoken to her a few years back, like JV, CB, and BN there is no interest there.

I'm working on a litle story about the area bounded by First and Second Aves and I & J Streets, which I may or may not finish.

Terry: Jack Evans? Huh. He didn't live in my  'hood'

I do not even remember that name.

Well, sometimes even a Z-car is going to have to slow down.

I have a football story about Biff at SW that I am not permitted to tell. You'll have to use your collective imaginations, but here is a pallet to draw in..

Could the driver in Terry's episode have been one of these cheery_gals? Steve's opponent was definitely male, I think he went to jail too.

The mention of Southwestern got me to thinking about the epic battle between Elbert Miller and Dennis Biletnikoff around 65-66 that I watched out at  the college. Here is a truncated list of San Diego NBA draftees.

Jack Evans does not show up, but curiously Elbert Miller was drafted twice,

Tschogl and Copp are the two Hilltop representatives.

1965  John Fairchild San Dieguito High* Los Angeles Lakers 2nd round, 8th pick

1967  Elbert Miller San Diego San Diego 7th round, 12th pick

1968  Elbert Miller San Diego Milwaukee 8th round, 12th pick

1968  Dave Miller Crawford San Diego 17th round, 1st pick

1969  Steve Rippe Lincoln San Francisco 8th round, 7th pick

1972  John Tschogl Hilltop Golden State 4th round, 13th pick

1974  Bill Walton Helix Portland 1st round, 1st pick

1976  Steve Copp Hilltop New Orleans 3rd round, 8th pick

Can someone check in a 1963 IDYLL to see if Christine Macevicz is pictured. She's in 1962, but not in 1964.

Maybe I'm milking it here, but there was a Dari-Fresh at at 3120 Bonita Road.

Another of those T Coats we've all come to know and love. Can you ID the wearer. Extra credit if you get the store name and salesperson.

Yes Bruce, I'm that Tom Bump of Halsey.  I lived across the street from Karen Brixius and I think you lived accross from Suzanne Phillips.  It would be nice to hear from Suzanne.  We went to the prom together.  Dinner at the El Cortez Skyroom, the prom, and the afterprom at a bowling alley.  Wow, that was a long time ago.

Hi Tom:

We were right on the corner so I was across from Suzanne (and before her Chris (Hazel Goes) Cook) and  the Farnsworths. The folks directly across from us are still there (or were a  few years back) and I had a nice chat with them. My sister Diane used to baby sit for them.

The Brixius family stayed in that house for a very long time, which is how I ran into Karen one day when I stopped by to visit with her parents. I would never have recognized her.

The Farnsworths moved at some point to Gary Emerson's house at Second and I.

Gary Emerson (Bill Burger and I used to hang around occasionally at that Emerson house, which was a magnet for cruiserslike  Fant, Adame, Hatton, Connoly, Dupree, Bilstrom, Turner, and more), but he is somewhere way north of San Diego interestingly enough along with Gloria Haider the last I heard.

I remember the Farnsworth moving.  The couple that moved into their old house had a boy that my sister used to babysit.  I also remember a couple across the street from you.  I used to mow their lawn for spending cash.  I think she had a Volvo and he had a Triumph motorcycle.

More occasional news from the dark side of CV. This time from the eighties. This part of town is now referred to as West or Old CV.  Isn't that where most of us, except those dairy farmers, equestrians, and Desiraes from Bonita and Sunnyside, lived?

Exene Cervenka, John Doe are pseudonyms, but are actually real people who were members of the punk band X. When I worked in Century City I lived in Hollywood, but that's another story.

I knew this guy and have a friend who hung around with him at times.

A Chula Vista, woman was the victim of a kidnapping' attempt Monday, according to Chula Vista police.Exene Cervenka, a receptionist ,at Third Avenue Pharmacy, was allegedly kidnapped, tied up and held in an apartment in the 700 block of 3rd Avenue by an acquaintance, John Doe, 35. Police reports give this account of the incident: Doe lured Cervenka to his apartment on the pretense he was going- to pay back some money the victim had loaned to him. Once inside, Doe allegedly pulled a gun and told the victim, "I'm sorry it has to be this way, but it's out of my hands. It's got to be handled this way. More people are involved than, just me." . Doe then reportedly tied Cervenka with three or four

.. . couldn't go through with the kidnapping and ransom, untied her, took her into the parking lot where he released her unharmed. Doe then fled the scene. Police arrived moments later, found Cervenka, and made a search of the apartment. Inside they found three or four lengths. of rope in the bedroom, what appeared" to 'be a starter pistol, and two hypodermic syringes and burnt spoon, which indicated narcotic activity. Police searched the apartment and the area but did riot immediately find Doe. Doe was found a few hours later in a storage room by a residents of the apartment complex. His wrists had been slashed in an apparent suicide attempt. He was taken into custody and transported to Community. Hospital and then transferred, to University Hospital's jail. ward for observation.

Re the Chula Vista big game; Shayne didn't lose that game. Our cheerleaders were better than theirs. UInlike football, basketball was such a great legacy at Hilltop. At the end of the JV season I was called up to the varsity for our one playoff game. Biletnikoff was magnificent in defeat to Grossmont with a 6'7" center named Baker. Baker was huge in those days and he blocked shots all night. I played against Steve Rippe (a lefty center) in summer league. He went to Lincoln and later UC Santa Barbara. My cousin Jim Finnerty (Sweetwater) joined himn at UCSB one year later. They had a pretty good team but I didn't see them play during my one year of freshman college basketball at UOP. We did meet up with former Saints player Bob Spence who was playing frosh ball at Santa Clara, one of our rivals. The college baseball scene in those days featured some San Diego athletes who made their way to Northern California, notably Bob Boone (Crawford, Stanford and HOF catcher for the Phillies). He was two years behind me; played third base at Stanford. We played against Graig Nettles (San Diego High School, San Diego State) when Pacific came down for the MCRD tournament in 1965. We beat them and won the tournament, an excellent homecoming for me. Here is something for Bruce to ponder. In our freshman college year when UCLA won the national title, their center was 6'5' and there was no one in San Diego playing basketball who was taller than 6'5" (Baker, of course, was taller in 1962). Five years later, there were many centers in San Diego and elsewhere at 6'10" or more. UCLA was populated by Alcindor and Walton among other big men. What accounts for this six inch growth spurt in the babies born between 1946 and 1950? Fallout from the bomb? Penicillin? More protein?

Must have been better coaching. They had the whole world in their hands.

If it wasn't them, it's gonna take some further looking around.

Not a great photo of Geraldl's street in CV.   It's within walking distance so I'll go back and get another. I kinda think the first names should have been included.

Does this work?

Why yes it does. I had trouble with it before.

More dark news. San Diego this time. El Cajon Blvd

December 2, 1961: Campus Drive-In snack bar employee Tom O'Leary got into an argument with a 21 year-old patron Dennis J. O'Connor. Things got increasingly heated, and O'Leary ended up pulling a knife on the patron and stabbing O'Connor to death. O'Leary was charged with unlawful killing and was found guilty of involuntary manslaughter.

It's a long story, but this is why eventually almost all drive-ins were closed down.

The whole story is here:

Just checking around in the photo gallery.

Apparently, Montel was just about as tall as Stuckey and at least three members of the squad (including Gary Kennedy's younger brother) didn't get the memo about the black Converse. At least no one was giving the finger.

I know it's probably been said before what happen to the Campus Drive-in twirling baton marque?

I am not sure that that question has actually been asked, but I'll find out (hopefully) what became of the twirler. Though she wasn't technically in the neighborhood, maybe I can track down Toni Marie Watts. She should know.

OK, I did not know Toni's middle name, I had to looki it up. I did find a bunch more of those Wilson's though.

in the HHS 1965 class.

James, John Lowry and Tom

I did not know any of them.

Give me Linda, Lloyd, Boyd and Loretta. There's some Wilson's I knew.

I'm still not happy with Gerald's street sign (it's actually a "place"). I'll be back.

Well upon further reflection I think that question was answered previously.

Today [2008] the neon lighted drum majorette is “alive and well” and resides at the College Grove Shopping Center.

and

There are small token neon majorettes sprinkled through the development to pay homage to what once stood there. But otherwise you’d have to say one old icon was replaced a new one. Starbucks.

State Theatre - I think I went there once.

Speaking about the dark side, let's not forget Kitty Genovese  from 1964. Even Sherwood Washburn couldn't understand it.

Winston Moseley, her killer, died in prison in 2016.

The Wikipedia summarizes it.

When we moved from Halsey to First Avenue, we lived next door to Toni Watts.  They lived on the corner of First & J.  She had an older brother.  I think his name was Gary.

Righto Tom. Gary was one year ahead of us. I didn't know you moved there. That would be the Charlotte Pescod (older) and Pam Tipton (younger) house if it was right next door.

Michele and I looked at that house a few years back. It had foundation and associated potentially severe termite issues so we passed.

Someone else bought it and it has not  fallen down.

How long did you live there?

That was my patrol boy corner BTW
