Looking through the YB's, I get the impression that hair was rather important.

Susan  thanks for posting the  CPJH photo.  I was sure a skinny little kid back then.  The group has to be either the Citizenship or Scholarship club since the girls far out number the boys!

Jerry & Bruce, the teacher wasn't a teacher, I think it was our VP.  Ask Geoge Gillow to look in his annual for the particulars, like the VP's name (Mr. Jones?), because that's who I got the photo from, George.  Also it was the CITIZENSHIP CLUB.  I was eligible for the Scholarship Club photo but somehow I missed that photo.

Oh, yeah, Bruce:  that Art Guild photo looks to be out of sych with our age-group, except for third from the left, front row, Marsha Durrant with her short, straight hair--she was always ahead of others in ways.  All the ratted hairdo's, etc. so it was of the Junior's and Seniors more--class of '62 or '63.  By 11th I'd cut my ratted type hair for a short cut that Beenfeldt had and, actually, at least two of our teachers.  My senior year, I grew into a long, straight hairdo that lasted a number of years, particularly my 3-years in Haight-Ashbury.  I think I recognize Richard Chapman (whatever happened to (?), as he lived on my street) in the top back row and Lorie (last name?), and LaBerta King?  Maybe some others whose names I can't recall.

Bruce, I think that building is done in "New International Style" from the 1930's.  My old Humanities II professor drilled architectural styles into all of us.  One of that styles features is a curve on an end of the building.  I lived in that area in the '80's and often shopped at Jaycee's--the nearest bigger market was the old Safeway, which is now Gala Foods  (Miller's Market on C & 30th was too far, back then--my second husband had been a meat cutter at Miller's for awhile in '82 & latter at Piggly Wiggly in Southeast San Diego).

Susan is correct that is James Jones the Vice Principal in the CPJHS 59 YB Citizenship Club picture:

If anyone would like the pdf files of the portions of the "Shield" yearbook that I sent to Bruce and Susan let me know.

Mr. Jones was quite a task master. If the boys didn't have a belt to hold thier pants in place, Mr. Jones provided a length of rope with which to do the job. Bill Burger and Larry Walton were repeat offenders.

Treasa:

I hung around with Burger a lot for a couple years. He was definitly oriented in the direction of trouble. I'm wondering if it was Jimmie Walton rather than Larry. Jimmie lived down the street from Bill and seems a more likely candidate.

Burger and I went grunion hunting at Coronado by the hotel with some of the Wrigley heirs. Bill's mom, who was really a sweet person, cooked the fish and we ate them. Bill became too much for her to handle and was shipped off to Colorado. I lost touch with him after that, seeing him maybe once or twice. There are lots of stories about his exploits, but I've never been able to track him down.

Susan:

Here's where I found that P-W photo http://www.agilitynut.com/deco/casandiego.html

and another interesting one from the page - a combo bar and tattoo parlor no less. Get a little buzzed and have some personal graffiti installed.

You are correct, it was Jimmy Walton. How could I forget, as I still carry the scar on my hand where he stabbed me with a pencil during Mr. Calvert's math class. I hope Jimmy's life had a good turn.

Bruce,

Somewhere I missed who your sister is.  What name did she go by while teaching?  I taught at several of the elementary schools in CV so may know her.

Thanks for keeping us informed on this forum.  It is amazing that you have kept track of some many events in Chula Vista.  My parents were very much involved in the building of the Chula Vista Community Hospital in the early 1970s.  I have the Golf Tournament booklets with Bob Hope, McLean (sp) Stevenson, Don Knotts, Jack Lemon.  Dad and Jack corresponded for a while.  Those fundraising events were memorable.  The hospital was eventually sold to a private company and is still located in the Telegraph Canyon area.

Tyce Engineering was prominent in the 1950s and 1960s, I believe, and Judy (Sydney Ocean) Tyce is the daughter of the owner.  There is a lot of interesting information on her uncle Robert during WWII.  She and her brother Robert may attend our gathering in September.

What do we know of Mrs. Hassler?  She was to marry Mr. MacDonald I heard, but know no more than that rumor.  Anyone know anything more?

What about Miss Peterson?  So many of us worked with her in Lancerettes.  My recollection is that she was always so kind and had great patience.

My recollection of Mr. Brelsford is that his patience was a bit shorter.  I remember giving him some glass marble type things that were to help calm the one who held them.  Was that a bit audacious?  Anyone have some info on these folks?

The reunion of the class of 1962 had some attendance of surviving teachers some of us had.  Jim (my husband) said that Mr. Thornton attended and was going to check on who else attended.  He will ask John Axsom.

Have any teachers been contacted?  It is always good to have someone at the reunion who is older than we are, don't you think?

A big thank you to this great looking reunion committee.  Adding the photo of them is wonderful.  Thank you for it, too!

Patti:

My sister's last teaching was at Chula Vista Hills. Outside her classroom is a tree planted in her honor and a rock with embedded plaque which reads Diane Wilson Dunn "A Champion for Kids", which indeed she was. Due to her health issues she could have retired long before, but she stuck it out "for the the kids".

Interesting that you brought up Bob Hope. I tried to grab a copy of a photo of him at the Country Club, but it was locked up.

There is more back down stream about Ms. Hassler and I'm privy to other information about her that will not show up here. Perhaps we can talk about it at the reunion. I did run into Mr. McDonald and Ms. Hassler down in Tijuana after we'd graduated and was happy to inform them that they should be traveling in the opposite direction, since it wasn't the safest part of town they'd wandered into.

I didn't connect the dots on the Banner in your name. They lived right up the street on First Avenue and I'm pretty sure Harry was the trumpet player. I saw their video a fews years back and was surprised to learn that they had left Coronado for CV. One of my sister's CVJHS YB's has a photo of Harry (?) and Dale (Dean's older brother) Butterfield playing trumpet as the flag is being raised.

I've got some stuff from the F. Street School reunion of 1963 kicking around somwhere. I imagine some of our group or their brothers and sisters attended F. Street.

Treasa:

Strange coincidence that you mention Mr. Calvert, his name just popped into my head yesterday. Math teacher-wise, I always liked Ms. Cole the best. Like Burger, I have no idea what became of Walton. I seem to recall that his father had a car dealership down on Broadway. Do you remember Mark or Ann Wiess, who also lived on L Street?

Burger was the driving force behind the non-sanctioned "sweat shirt" day at HJHS. There were quite a few participants all of whom were sent home to change. I didn't get caught until after lunch so I just took the rest of the day off.  I believe I was wearing my Ed Roth (pictured below and who I met at the car show in Balboa park) weirdo shirt of the "RatFink" that day.

Sure glad they weren't confiscating the rebel-wear, those things weren't cheap. .

Tyce Family

The Tyce family were longtime residents of Chula Vista.  In the 1920s Ludwig Tyce formed the Tycrete company to manufacture a waterproof, colored cement that he patented--see picture below.   Tyce brothers Rollie and Bob started a school of aviation and later an engineering firm.

Robert Tyce was the first Chula Vistan to be killed in WWII at Pearl Harbor.  He is buried at Glen Abbey as "First American Killed at Pearl Harbor".  Which would make him the first American killed in the war.

There is more on the Tyce operations and family in Schoenherr's Chula Vista Centennial book.

Here's a list apparently from 2011.  Ms. Hassler is not on it and I do not know when she passed away.

I see Ken Anderson occasionally, he swims at the YMCA on a regular basis. The only name I recall him asking me about is Terry Foster.  He tells me Ted Testa is not doing all that well and apparently lives up in Redding.

Please note, I have not attempted to verify any of this, but I know that a number of names have been correctly placed on the list.

George and Bruce,

Thanks for posting the answers to my questions.

About Martha Hassler:  I fondly remember her antics and  fingers swishing her hair while she lectured.  It was always a pleasure to be in her class.  One grading day, I was given a message to return to Mrs. Hassler's room.  I had an early class with her and had received a B+.  She had told a later class that Rosie and I had the same scores and had given Rosie an A-, (apparently the class had something to do with convincing her that Rosie deserved an A).  Because we had the same scores, she sent a student to find me so she could change my grade to A-.  That is a mentor moment in my life and useful while I taught school.

Bruce,

I did not connect the dots that Diane is your sister.  We were fast friends for many years and I was so sorry at her passing . We attended some "gifted conferences" several times.   Jim and I have many fond memories of her.  She was very special and deserved any accolades she received.  How are her sons doing?  We used to drive Ryan to the gifted magnet where I taught in Juarez-Lincoln many moons ago. Last time I saw him, he had returned to J-L to demo playing some instruments in a band.

BTW,

Jim and Harry converse nearly everyday and Harry is due for a visit with us in Utah in June.  He has lived in San Antonio for many years. Jim still talks with John Axsom often,  who also lives in San Antonio.  Jim makes an annual trip to see both. I mention this, because you have brought up their names in past forum entries.

It is good to know who is left from the teaching staff at HHS.  I assume any not listed are still living.  Bruce and George are so thorough with finding information, there is little doubt of accuracy.  Please keep up the good work!

George,

Was Jerry Rindone in CV politics?  I have a vague recollection of reading something about him or was it his brother, John?  Figured you would know.  Jerry went to CVJH when I was there.

Speaking of CVJH, when the boundaries were drawn for HJH, I lived on the wrong side of First Ave.  It killed me to have my friends leaving me behind at CVJH.  Junior High age is tough enough!  I was sure I would not survive.  We didn't move into the Hilltop house until May of 1964.  That surely wasn't soon enough!

When did they separate us again with the building of Castle Park High?  Was that in the fall 1963?  That was a rough time, too.

Jerry Rindone became the principal at Hilltop High. I remember him from Castle Park days but lost track of him. His father was the superintentent of schools as I recall and his older brother John also acheived some notoriety in administration. I believe Jerry was elected ASB President at Castle Park. At Hilltop, during our day, Mr. Brelsford was the ASB advisor and taught journalism. Kay Ochi was editor of our Lance newspaper. I didn't like Brelsford at first but he helped me a great deal during my ASB service. At the end of my senior year, he gave me two tickets to the Old Globe Theatre as a graduation present. My journalism training was good preparation for all the writing required in college. His mentoring is something I greatly valued. Another great influence on my life was John Green. He was our counselor and took a special interest in our college choices. He nearly had me enrolled at Cal Western on a basketball scholarship, but I chose to go to Pacific in Stockton. I'm sure my life would have been very different if I had stayed in San Diego. That beautiful campus in Point Loma looked mighty good at the time. Am I right, Patty, that you went to Cal Western?

Jerry Rindone was running for Mayor I believe, I haven't checked lately. Jerry used to work for the rec. dept. when I did. Maybe he'll appoint me to the Building Permits Dept. if elected. Vote Rindone/Wilson, bring rafting back to CV.

I told Ms. Hassler I deserved an A+. She just laughed and said "that sounds like something you'd say". Remember her "soapbox" speeches?

More to follow, gotta cut some tile for Michele. ...

USIU is still a very nice campus, if I go back to college, it will be my first choice. To avoid traffic and get in some gorgeous scenery, Michele and I run along Sunset Cliffs Blvd to the Natural Park (below), continue along the cliffs, then up the hill through the campus and back. Golden Gym is still there and there are pickup games at noon. The school has some fairly successful atheletic programs.

On second thought, I wonder if they're hiring. Intro to computer programming with excursions into Aritifical Intelligence research - that's the ticket. MWF 11:00-12:00.

It's OK to run through the park, just don't try to surf there.

Jerry Rindone

Jerry Rindone is running for Mayor:  www.jerryrindone.com. The primary election is on June 3rd.

Jerry is a 1964 graduate of CVHS.  He was principal of Hilltop High School. Jerry also served 16 years on the Chula Vista City Council.

His brother John was superintendent of the Sweetwater High School District, just like their father Joe.  John died of cancer a number of years ago.

Jerry lives in my neighborhood next door to our classmate Bea Price Ericksen.

Before moving to Bonita, Jerry lived on Guava where he grew up.  That is where they had the Christmas decorations.

Terry,

Yes, I did.  Kay Ochi and I roomed together.  She has a special place in my heart forever!

The campus is gorgeous.  I loved being there.  Knew a lot of surfer boys.  Some of whom were more interested in surfing than studying.  It was the perfect place for me to attend, eventhough I only tried to surf on a board once.  Did survive it.

The Education Department was full of wonderful people who were nurturers.  John Green encouraged my attendance there and I am forever grateful to him.

You are right to wonder if the college chosen has much to do with the direction one takes in life.  Good for a philosophical discussion, don't you think?

Well after reading Rosie's posts my eyes are a bit tired, so here's a little musical/video interlude, especially for our friends residing in Utah and/or enjoying skiing (at east Patty and Gail). Back when this was made skiing was just about my favorite thing in the world. I've corresponded with Marc Johnson, who is responsible for the post to Youtube. He's now a scientist and a good man. It's fair to say I've watched this considerably more than once. Great song choice. Shambala, I'm quite certain is far-removed from Chula Vista.

I do have to highlight this one from Rosie's newspaper.

"I, will my one legged A's to some poor guy.

And all my D's to David C.

My C's an B's I give with a sigh

But I'll keep my A's all for me"

-----(Danny Schweers)

Nobody ever guessed who this was, so here is my long lost friend Danny. Like my long lost friend Michele, some folks bloomed later in life. Danny is a very good man, Michele a very good woman.
