Barbara Jean Mangles (Cook)

Memorial Day 2014 --This is who I will be remembering.  Brian and I corresponded as friends during his college years and his deployment.  I actually found his letters in my search for Hilltop memorabilia  He was a great loss to Chula Vista and to this Country.

This is just a note to let all our veterans, and current military know that you are appreciated.  Thank you for your service in keeping us safe over the years.

My father was in the Navy, my husband in the Navy and my brother Duane was in the Army.

We miss those that are gone and say thank you to their families.

Thank goodness we have a Memorial Day to keep our memories fresh.

On a lighter note, does anyone remember the Frosties location on Broadway.  It was always a treat when my dad took us through.

We'll be spending the day with Michele's mom and dad (two purple hearts for 'The Bull', the very same guy who chased me away from Michele back in 1964. - I'm OK now though)..

Sorry for the photo quality. I'm going to go back down and get new photos.

Hey Bruce.  No , this was a drive thru ice cream place.  It was in the middle of a parking lot.  I believe O'Riellys is there now.

Barbara, Brian Weber was my mentor on the track team when we were 10th graders and he was a senior. Two years later I returned the favor and was a mentor for Brian's younger brother, Eric.  After college, and Laurie and I were married and had children of our own, we named our son after Brian.   And then, 20 years after that when our Brian visited the Vietnam Memorial in DC, we found Brian Weber's name on the wall and made an etching.  To our great surprise , both Brian's have the same middle name as well.  The saying goes "all gave some but some gave all".  Brian Weber remains a true American hero

In our house, Brian Webber's name is mentioned.  My husband, Jim was in the same graduating class.  We looked for his name on the Wall in Washington DC and have periodically mourned the loss.  It was enriching to read Barb's information and to get a fuller picture of what happened to him after leaving HHS.  We are so glad to see the appreciation given to honor his memory.  Those who knew him, knew he would always make a difference wherever he was.  It is good to see that he has not been forgotten.

Glad to hear from Dick and his recollections.  I am sure Dick has many stories he could share with us about his own experiences.

Dick and Patty,

Thank you both so much for sharing about Brian.  I, too, have an etching of his name, obtained for me by Bev (Burton) Ryan while she was visiting the Memorial in DC.  I can remember Bev and I going to find his resting place in Point Loma one rainy day.  We couldn't find it.  Living in Point Loma, she later returned in better weather and let me know she had found it.  What a wonderful thing that he has a child named after him!  I think I heard or read that somewhere, but didn't realize it was your child, Dick!  No better testament could be made to any man, than to have a friend name his son after him.

CHULA VISTA VETERANS

The City of Chula Vista's website has a good information on veterans: http://www.chulavistaca.gov/veterans/

One page has a list of all the Veterans who died in the wars: http://www.chulavistaca.gov/veterans/bio.asp

On this page you can click on a name and get information.  Brian Webber and Michael Rambur are listed. The information is a pdf document that can be saved.

Michael Rambur was a 1965 graduate of Hilltop High and also has a street named after him:

Wow! I am so impressed with our classmate's recollection of our past 50 years! I've lived out of Chula Vista for 45 years but have so many nice memories of what our Chula Vista was then. I love the responses from those of you who are sharing with all of us our beloved teachers, classmates, Mel's, Dairy Queen, remember Bob the Blind Man who sold papers on 3rd Avenue? (Hope the p.c.police aren't reading this!), but how about the Vogue? I'm sure there are many memories some we love and some not so much!! Oh, and can't forget Chub's, the pool hall my mom always whisked me past! I'm Having so much fun getting to know all of you again and looking forward to September!

Does anyone remember and/or know about Wayne Humphries? Was his middle name Warren? He lived in Bonita up above the old store and as I recall was killed in Viet Nam in 1965. His name doesn't appear on the list George pointed to nor on the memorial down in The Park., so we'll remember him here.

CNN is airing it's show on The Sixties tonight.

Since it was a formative or transformative decade for many of us (junior & senior high, college, grad school, first marriages, maybe first time living away from San Diego or Southern California, exposure to war, exposure to drugs, ...), it might be worth taking a look.

Thanks to Gail Dillon, many of us do not have to wonder where we were (or should have been) on JUNE 16, 1961 at TEN O'CLOCK. Afterwards, many of the boys promptly went out for haircuts. The fellow on the right, below me and on my right (OK right in front of Jim Longerbone) Robert Piety spoke to us all on the topic:

INTO THE FUTURE WITH E'S

"Audience please remain seated until the class has left the platform"

My observation is that since the ceremony was held at the HHS Amphitheatre, there probably was no platform, but I could be wrong.

Since you mention Jim Longerbone, I think it's relevant to remember that Jim, Tom Hayes and I all went to the Naval Academy at Annapolis after graduation. Very few high schools if any have 3 graduates go to Annapolis.  We visit at least every 5 years at USNA reunions.  Tom had a successful career as a Naval Aviator, flying a Helos like his Dad did.  Jim was always smart and he went into yhe submarine service as a nuclear engineer before transitioning to a successful career in private industry.  I served in the surface ship Navy with the last half  of my career on aircraft carriers. So HHS '64 was represented in air, surface and subs.  Tom is coming back from his home in Vermont for our reunion and we're looking forward to having him back home for a bit.

Good to hear from you Dick. Never knew your middle name, but it's a good one. I believe I pointed out the success of you three back up stream in this thread and still find it very impressive.

It would be nice if you could dig up some photos of you "Los Tres Amigos" from back in the day. You know, maybe climbing the Herndon Monument.

More thanks to Gail.  Rosbank (June, 1958) and HHS-1964.

High school speakers:

"IN TODAY ALREADY WALKS TOMORROW"

CHALLENGE - PATRICIA STIRNWEISS

OPPORTUNITY - NANCY NIXON

RESPONSIBILITY - FREDERICK LONGWORTH

(When I get my scanner back on-line, I'll post up all the contents.)

Fred makes occasional appearance here. Nancy became a veterinarian and pioneer in holistic approaches to vet med. In my opinion the smartest of the whole 1964 lot. Anybody out there who can update us on Ms. Stirnweiss?

(Audience please be seated during the Recessional)  Apparently my advice was heard and heeded.

OK Hilltop Drive Elementary School kids. I've got Mr. Hall (6), Ms. Malecki (5-sp?), Ms. Fuller (4), but I'm at a road block for 3 thru kindergarten. Anybody have some names? I seem to recall First grade as Ms. Steak (again sp?).

Mrs Rouch was a kindergarten teacher at hilltop elementary, thanks for all the memories it's been great!

Bingo Ellen, that one rings a bell. I think there were two sessions of kindergarten AM/PM (good name for a market). I started when I was four years old, I believe in the PM session and I remember nap time (good) and lying still while someone painted the outline of my body. I also recall walking to and from school alone. Yikes in today's world.

So the guy in the letterman's jacket ended up on a nuclear submarine (maybe less choppy under the surface? Heh! Heh!)

and the other two have sort of vanished, though I think I know where Bandelin is.

Hi there Dick,

Such a small world to have your younger brother end up teaching and doing track at Hilltop.  He also tutored my granddaughters.

Madeline, you're kind to have those nice words about my brother Chip.  We're very proud of him. All three of our kids had him as their track coach (he found a place for everyone who came out).  He was mostly a math teacher but he also ran the yearbook.  But his biggest successes came from being a coach for track and cross country.  The gym is filled with banners from his championship teams, almost one per year for over 20 years. And last year he was elected to the Breitbard Hall of Fame for coaches.  I wonder if any other HHS classmates had him for their teacher or coach?

Thanks Terry. Mrs. Treais is the one I recognize. My mom had a bunch of elementary school report cards and I've misplaced my class photos. I'll have to reopen the archives.

Who could ever forget the extraordinary 5th grade teacher, Mrs. Rainbolt. Mrs. Rainbolt did double duty as the choir director. She was very influential in my decision  to become a teacher. Of course, there were very forgettable teachers--Mrs. Fuller comes to mind.

Interesting Treasa. My sister who taught her whole life and was very well respected, in turn respected Mrs. Fuller tremendously. Mrs. Fuller had a very strong positive effect on me and encouraged my off-curriculum reading of books like Mutiny on the Bounty, which I recall starting around Second grade, completing the trilogy in Fourth. I think a significant part of good teaching is inspiration. I guess everyone gets inspired differently.

My younger brother with much better memory than I, reminded me of a few Hilltop Drive Elementary teachers:Mrs. Mitchell, Mrs. Picklesimer, Mr. Borup and Mr. Gevings. I think Mr. Gevings became a principal in the school district. I think Mrs. Mitchell and Mrs. Picklesimer were there when we were in 5th and 6th grade, the only grades I attended Hilltop Drive Elementary. Mr. Borup and Mr. Gevings may have been there at that time or they may have arrived after we went on to Castle Park Jr. High.
