TOM RICE D-DAY JUMP

The San Diego Union-Tribune had an article and pictures of Mr. Rice on his jump out of an a airplane yesterday (June 6, 2014).  It was on the first page above the fold.

Here is a KPBS story:

This statemnt regarding CV and it's size got me to wondering:

"Rindone defended some of the spending, like the brand new city hall. He said it set the state’s eight largest city up for success."

So I looked around a bit. (Internet pages need to have a date field prominently displayed IMO, it's very difficult to trace the validity of stats without one).

  2. San Diego 1,305,736

Thanks for the info on the teachers.  Does anyone remember the name of the Spanish teacher he was a male. I wasn't too crazy about him thought he was very strange.

George-

Thanks so much for the link about Mr. Rice. Who knew? Perhaps our class turned out so well because we were taught by humble, brave people such as he. What a joy to know he's going well.

Mr. Rice is a patriot and a great role model. As our Civics teacher, he taught us well. I am proud to report that my uncle also jumped on D-Day. He was one of the paratroopers who made the night jump with the 82nd Airborne and penetrated into France behind the German front lines. He was a medic and saw a lot of action during the war including the Battle of the Bulge. He has always been very modest about his heroism and rarely talked about the horror of war. He is 97 and still living in Chula Vista. I call him every year on D-Day to thank him for saving the world. My daughter Molly visits him whenever she is in the west and she too never hesitates to thank him for his service. It's a good thing when the current generation is reminded of the importance of these veterans and their extraordinary sacrifices. Grady never married and has no children, but he is celebrated by all the daughters fathered by the three sons of his brother. As he ages, he gets a little more sentimental and less gruff. He told Molly recently that the girls had softened him up.

Jo Ann- The Spanish teacher you remember is Mr. Gronenberg (sp?) He was indeed creepy. I don't think  he lasted very long at HHS.

Hi Joann

I had Mr. Clayton for Spanish.  Got Mr. Greene to convince my  mom that I needed to transfer from Spanish 2 to Clothing cause it would effect my grade point average.  Since I felt that I did not do well in 9th grade in Mr. Payne's Spanish class.  Pat Hodges

Teresa, interesting to hear your description of Mr. Gronberg. Whenever it was that I grew up many years ago, I met a couple who were teachers in San Diego. They happen to know Mr. Gronberg either from teaching with him in the San Diego Unified School District or they were classmates with him sometime in their educational experiences. And they confirmed your "creepy" description. And it's so interesting to read various memories of classmates. When I  think back I do believe we were all very fortunate to have the education we had, the good, bad and neutral contributed to our lives in so many ways.

Stop eating!

"For the new study "Prolonged Fasting Reduces IGF-1/PKA to Promote Hematopoietic-Stem-Cell-Based Regeneration and Reverse Immunosuppression" which was published in the journal Cell Stem Cell on June 5, researchers from the University of Southern California (USC) discovered that prolonged fasting can help reverse this negative effect of aging as it induces renewal of the body's immune system.

The researchers likewise found that long periods of fasting also reduces the levels of a growth hormone known as IGF-1 which is associated with aging and cancer risks.

Great photos, thanks Rosie.

It was great to see the video of Mr. Rice doing so well. I was in his Civics class when the school speakers came on announcing that John Kennedy had been shot in Dallas. We were led to belive he was wounded. But it was clear within a few hours that he was dead.

It struck me that I was born in San Angelo, TX and that Texas had now become a state where one of our most beloved Presidents was assasinated.

Mr. Rice was an excellent teacher. My English and Algebra teachers also influenced me greatly. But I can't recall their names.

Who was the music teacher during this same period? He was an accomplished opera singer.

Eating? Well not altogether, just for a couple days at a time. Entire report is here http://www.cell.com/cell-stem-cell/pdf/S1934-5909(14)00151-9.pdf

Didn't go to HHS, is named Wilson. Should strike a chord with a few folks here.

I remember Mr. Gene Clarke who I had for Math (Bookkeeping) and he was light civic opera singer (maybe Starlight?).  There was an assembly where he sang "Mariah" beautifully from, and I can't remember the name of the production.  He was wonderful!  And he was a very good teacher, a bit quirky but nice!

Hi Karen, I wish I could take credit for remembering.  My mother wrote their names on the back of my class pictures through the second grade. In this 6th grade picture, I had to look in my 7th grade CVJH annual to identify everyone.  I am so glad you are coming to reunion.  Can't wait to see you!

Hi All

I saw Mr Rice in the news after his jump.  That was great.  How daring for his age.

I attended Hazel Goes Cook Elementary for 6th grade, only.  I think it was on Cuyamaca Street?  My younger brother Mark and I moved to C.V. in 1957 originally from a very small town in Ohio.  We lived directly behind the school yard.  I loved my teacher, Mr. Crumley he was and still is one of the best teachers I ever had.  My new friends at H.G.C. were Linda Worley, Barbara Mangles, Judy Peters, Julie Smith, Roger Schmidt, Anita Rochmes, Judy Dunne, JoAnne Ledford and her crazy little brother Ricky!, Bev Burton who was fresh from Texas (I think?).  Love the memories!

Sandy-I remember Mr. Clarke as well. I believe the song you remember is "They Call the Wind Maria" from "Paint Your Wagon." Mr. Clarke had the most amazing voice. As teens, we were so self -centered, we had no idea that the teachers had a "life" outside of school.

Susan L. Frise

Yeah, I went to Hazel Goes Cook also.  It's side was on East L St. and it's front door was on Cuyamaca.  I had Mr. Gonzales who, interestingly, had all the Mexican students, even though they spoke perfect English.  I was friendly with Mary Salamone (who went on to Chula), and sat next to Marcello Medina.  We also had John Link in our class and, from my block, reddish haired Richard Chapman, Larry Biggers, another Mary (claimed she was Hawaiian).  Mr Gonzales obviously and visibly favored people, and they were the rich, popular girls whose parents were military.  I remember them well:  Clara Jane Lacky and Jane Landry.  The father of the latter was a Navy commander and invited our whole class to visit his aircraft carrier, which we did, having lunch on board.  Clara Jane and Jane always got to be captains when our class played baseball during PE.  We also got a new girl, Blanca, who spoke only Spanish, which caused Mr. G to teach us all a little beginning Spanish, causing me when I walked down 3rd Ave. to notice the signs "Se Habla Espanol" in some shop windows, which latter brought about discussions by my notably conservative Republican parents, which in the long run (they being so 'retarded') caused me to become a Democrat...however, Mr. Gonzales's class was memorable.

I also recall the salacious Mr. Gronberg, nasty man he was indeed.  Creepy, yes.  Didn't he get fired because of saying creepy things to some girl a couple years after us?  I thought my sis, Class of '66, told me that?

Great pictures, Rosie.  It's amamzing to me to see how much the first graders looked like the seniors they became.

Still thinking about Mr. Rice and D-Day. . .I went to Paris in 1994, arriving just a few days after June 6.  I took a bus trip from Paris to the D-Day beaches and surrounding areas and, as I said in an earlier post, it was a very moving experience.  One of the things I found most touching speaks to the image of the French as unfriendly to tourists, unappreciative, etc;  I think that's a really bum rap, at least for certain segments of the French population.  All along the route, especially as we got closer to the landing beaches were signs of all sorts - in living room windows, standing on front lawns, most of them hand-lettered - saying things like "America, we remember," "America, France thanks you," "France has not forgotten."  Even if you allow for the fact that the world was watching, there was just no doubt of the sincerity.  I also met a man who was ten when Paris was liberated and his memory was of American soldiers giving him chocolate.  He told me that his parents often reminded him as he was growing up of the gratitude France owed to America.

Yeah, been waiting to hear some comments about Mr. Gronberg.  Get this, Julie Smith and I were 2 of his "favorites" in Homeroom.  We did not appreciate his "humor".  So what's he do?  Gives us both a C or maybe it was a D in Homeroom!!  Homeroom shouldn't have even been included on our GPA.  And, some of my teachers told me he actually went to them and asked if I had an attitude problem?!  Well yeah, but only in his "class"!  He said I was arrogant.  I guess even as young teen girls, we had a second sense of what a "ivr-pa" (remember pig-latin?) was and didn't find anything funny about him!  Hope I don't get sued for that comment, but it's true.  He was known to look down girls blouses and who knows what else??  Guess we were feminists long before it was political.....

Susan- I was also friends with Mary Salomone we met when all of us were going to C .PJH. Started playing violin together the last I saw her was in the late 80's she was visiting her mom and had her daughter with her.

I think we all got good educations and most of our teachers were great.  One I remember well was my music teacher Mr. Wagner he taught at HJH and then moved to the high school with us, but after a couple of years he took a teaching job at Southwestern.

Pat,  how was South Carolina? We are going to Jamaica in a couple of weeks can't wait!
