I'm pretty sure I got this from John Axsom's (now inactive) web site, so I'm sure he's in there too. I do remember Craig's name being mentioned. What's impressive to me, in addition to the clarity of the photo, is how innocent everybody looks. I've got several class photos from Hilltop Drive Elementary School kicking around somewhere. I'll put them up later. Michele thinks she may have a Fourth and/or Fifth grade photo, but she was in Hawaii for Sixth grade.

More counter space. Zontek's circa 1940's. Grabbed this from the CV Library webpage. Notice the banner through the middle (kind of dumb place to put it, in my opinion). Are those mini-jukes?

*By 1964, Neiderfrank's had moved to 726 A St., National City

Neiderfranks was in National City a long time before 1964. We went there when I was in elementary school before moving to Chula Vista in 1957.  It is STILL a place where we always go whenever I'm home for a visit.  My Dad loved taking us there and treating us to an ice cream cone.  They still have delicious ice cream!!!

I remember Mel's. I think it was owned by Mr & Mrs. Glascow.  Their son, Ralph,  was a couple years ahead of us.   When I worked at Beneficial Finance we would go there for the lemon meringue pie.  My cousin would get rhubarb pie and I couldn't understand who would want a pie made of "celery".  LOL!  Now, living in the Midwest, rhubarb is one of my favorites and is NOTHING like celery!!!

Michele: My sister's 1958 yearbook shows Neiderfranks listed at 362 Third Ave. I don't see an ad for them in the 1959 book.

In 1958, Walter Coop was choosing "a half gallon of his favorite" and the sign says "5 HALF GALLONS Any Flavor $4.50".

The 1963 yearbook has Neiderfranks still on Third Ave. This time with Don Montel. I don't have a copy but it is on line. You can page through it on Classmates.com and there was another site that had the book available too. This other site, which I can't remember, had better quality images.

I've always loved Lemon Meringue Pie, but on your recommendation, I'll have to give rhubarb a try. Gotta stick with the Michele's of the world you know.

EDIT: I'm beginnning to wonder whether there were two (or more) Neiderfranks locations.

Does anyone have elusive (you can't just find he or she the first time you look)  'what ever happened to lists"? Mine at vairious time has included:

Michele Walter - thankfully I found out, though it did take a while.

Brad Neal - a long time, but I did find him.

Hank Sieradzski. - did not  find him, but know how to.

Mary Cotton - very hard to find also, but yes.

Carl Bandelin - may know where he is.

Danny Schweers - found (actually found twice) and he makes an appearance a ways back in the thread.

Fred Longworth - similar to Danny, he's back there to.

Cheryl Chase - found Marty, but no Cheryl.

Bob Shine - no clue.

Billy Burger - no luck here either despite alot of effort.

Kathy Overton - know where she is.

Eisenhower Visit in 1960

Here are some pictures from the Eisenhower visit that I got from Bud Wilson (Congressman Bob Wilson's nephew)

Interesting that the program was bilingual in 1960. Clearly whoever was responsible for that was as farsighted as Ike.

How did Newt wrangle his way into the high school band when he was still in Junior High?

Bob McAllister went right from sponsoring the St. Rose of Lima (spanning attendees of Hilltop, Chula Vista and Saints)  championship little league team (The McAllister Yankees) into the mayor's office.

I remember going to Yardage City in 8th grade to buy the material for our homemaking classes project of making a skirt--I choose a pea-green color that I ended up rarely wearing and always hating.  My Mom also had bought the material there to make my 6th grade graduation dress for our Cook Elementary graduation (now called Promotion): it was white, sleeveless with red rosebuds and a red cumberbund.  I loved that dress and wore it to our Presbyterian Sunday School--my Dad helped pour the concrete for our new church on Hilltop Drive.  Prior to that we met at the 7th Day Adventist Church near D St, north of E St.

In response to a question about me being in the High School band, I'm pretty sure Hilltop Jr. High School was playing too.  I remember playing Hail to the Chief there. anyone else remember that?

I do see the program NOT listing the jr. high band... but somehow I was playing. I can't remember if we were a combined band or what. I'll try to ask Mr. Padelford and see if he remembers.

Hi Everyone:

I have read all of the Post put out to everyone.  Bruce you are the busy one.  I have been in this town since the beginning of my time.  Born Mercy Hospital on 12/5/1946 along with the rest of you 67 year olds.  My mom would send me to the Seville's Market all the time, she would give mke the change for whatever I was to purchase and then walk me to the corner and watch me cross, then stand there until I came home.  We lived across the street from Chula Vista Junior High until the year I was to start going there and then we moved to Alpine Avenue down the street from, Shayne Shuller, Vicky Hughes, Walter Hess, Marilyn Thrower, Jimmy and Johnny the (twins), Gary Fereno (sp) and Danny Sawyer.  First day of school Shayne and I walked together.  I too am looking for a few people.  Gloria Ledesma for one.  I also loved to go to the Seville Theater and the Vogue for the Cisco Kid Roundup.  Hope to see you all at the 50th reunion.

The reason that the Ike visit program was bi-lingual is that is was a joint Rotary club meeting with Tijuana and Chula Vista. My mom's boss and Bob Wilson's brother Dick Wilson was responsible for organizing the meeting. It would have been pretty nasty if a joint mexican-USA visit wasn't bi-lingual

We need to get in touch with the guy who programmed the event in Spanish and English to see if HJHS band can get a retroactive mention. wink   Maybe we can photoshop up the program that George provided.

I was in that band, which did not have uniforms when I was in it, but I definitely did not play at the Ike visit. Perhaps it was just a subset of the band or, more likely, I was in Mr. Wagner's doghouse.

Good to see some other folks joining in here. Hi Newt and Bea.

Everybody has tons of memories and each inidividual has his/her own unique perspective on things and events. This endeavor could become a priceless record if more folks chip in.

Bea:

I think it was Gary Feraldo.

Danny Sawyer, that's a nme I haven't thought of in a long time. Were the twins Ryans? That's my guess. There were however a couple of Wilson twins Boyd and Lloyd at Castle Park.

Michele has been wondering about Gloria Ledesma too. So  I guess now she's on my track-down list.

Mr. Padelford was my home teacher and I had him for band at CPJHS. I'm wondering when he moved to Hilltop. I don't recall him ever being at the junior high.

Finally (thought we'd never get there huh?). Does anybody remember Butch Hindman from junior high? He came across as a real tuff customer and I never was interested in testing him out. Anyway, after all these years I discovered his name was Dowayne. I  may have to add him to my 'what ever happened to list".

This is Butch's "then" image.

Does anyone remember Lake Barrett Road?  It's a very narrow, steep, winding, single lane road up to Barrett Lake.

It is now closed. The only access to Barrett Lake is to hike in or buy a "fishing" ticket from Ticketron and be "guided" in off Lyons Valley Rd.

East County Peaks - Otay Mtn. is 7. (FROM: http://www.peakture.com/morenabutte.php

Actually, Mr. Greeno was band director at Hilltop Jr at the time.  I have Bill Sumner asking him about my retarded memory of playing for that. Maybe I just saw it and imagined I was playing? I'm still waiting for Mr. Greeno's response. It's been a memory of mine for 50 years..

You're right Newt. That's why these forums are a good thing. I have forgotten or misremembered quite a few things, that I am now (temporarily?) straight on. On the good side, at least I didn't confuse Greeno with Falbe or Mrs. Cole, but if you tell me that the band actually did have uniforms, I'm going to have to get into another line of work.

Speaking of Mrs. Cole, I still remember her giving us a mathematical explanation of why a spoke wheel appears at times to be going backwards when it is actually going forwards. Don't remember the explanation, just that she gave it. It's an illusion to be now.

No mention of hodads on either the 1963 forum or this one.

More Ike (looking back from 2009):

The whole story is here http://www.chulavistarotary.org/gallery5.html.

Included are photos of Bud and Brad Wilson, The Thursday Songsters, and the commemorative "Camphor" (questionable choice since it is a component of embalming fluid) Tree and Plaque.

Newt. One possibility is that the program had a misprint in it and should have said "Junior". Maybe someone should hotfoot it over to the Rotary Club and check out the photos they have, since it's hard to make out any detail in what we've seen to date. I'm surprised that there aren't more photos floating around in the ether.

Does anyone remember these ribbons? They were used for everything (well at least for elections and sporting events) back in the old days. I think the first I ever had was for a Chula Vista High School football game. It's hard to read, but that's my name, homeroom 7-16, 6/10/59 and Mr. Padelford's "stamp of approval". More ribbons courtesy of Alan Hayashi and the 1963 forum page.

Ribbons!!!  Oh yes!!  I have a bunch of them somewhere. And remember, Friday was always Green/Black/White day and we would wear the school colors, along with the ribbons, to show our "School Spirit"!   I also remember how the school would fly the school flag whenever any of our teams won their event.  Does Hilltop still have that tradition???

I have just joined the classmate profiles list and want to share some photos I have found. They are from Hilltop Drive Elementary and I have one more I'll send in another message. I recognize faces but I'm not remembering all names. In the 6th grade photo is Bruce Wilson who I see as a frequent contributor to the forum. Also I think many of you will recognize Terry Maple who was a friend from the 5th grade to 1964. Karen Tachiki Savel

Hi Karen:

Good work!, Thanks for those photos. I recognize quite a few faces in there. I have about a 75% recognition rate in the first one, including Dan Schweers, making a second appearance in the forum @ row 3, col. 4.

Elementary school photos are great too.

First pass:

Castle, Hughes, Fernandez, Holland, Sorenson, Baldwin, Tachiki, Haffley, Bazzel, Anderson, Swallow. Brown, Grovenor, Steiner, Gastellum, Ross ...

and a photo of Mr. Tom Hall, who Terry Maple and I have spent a considerable amount of time searching for, but who has never made it off the "I wonder what ever happened to" list.

Some names are right of the tip of my tongue, but does anyone know who row 3, col. 9 is in the sixth grade photo?

And check out rows 2,3/col 6 ??? Isn't that Joy Z Twice?

Did anyone else live in the Hilltop Drive Circle housing project? Whilst looking for my elementary school group photos, I came across a number of old photos showing what the place looked like. Also, I have a small amount of film (mostly the Wilson kids, but it does show the project too).

Speaking of Terry Maple, has anyone Googled him lately? He's got 10 PAGES of "clicks." One year he sent a Christmas card/letter with a picture of his daughter (one of three) who was the place kicker on her high school's football team. Like father, like daugther!

Terry's work with animals and zoos is amazing... but that's no surprise after seeing him in action as class and ASB president. Terry: are you out there?

Karen-So glad you posted those elem pix. We all looked so sweet. By the time we made it to 9th grade we tried so hard to look sophisticated.

I was able to identify a few more in the 6th grade class.

I found it amusing that Joy Z had two pictures . Didn't She, Diane Gastellem and Kathy Swallow live within a couple of houses of each other on Hilltop Dr?

Hope you will join us in September for our 50th.

I am enjoying the comments that our classmates have posted to this site. Bruce and George have been excellent historians. Kudos!
