STEVE M. "DIRT" NICHTER, 56, of Auburn, died on Saturday, Sept. 25, 2010, 3:30 p.m., at DeKalb Memorial Hospital, Auburn. Born Oct. 10, 1953, in Whitley County he was the son of Herb and Mary (Bherns) Nichter. He was a golf course superintendent at Fort Wayne Country Club, Greenhurst Country Club and most recently at Garrett Country Club. He was a member of the Garrett Eagles, Auburn Moose and Sons of the American Legion, in Auburn. He is survived by his mother, Mary Nichter of Churubusco; a son, Michael J. Nichter of Indianapolis; a brother, David Nichter of Columbia City; and a sister, Bonnie Zuber of New Haven. He was preceded in death by his father; a brother, Brian Nichter; and a sister, Mary Nichter. Funeral service 11 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 30, 2010, at Thomas Funeral Home, 1277 C.R. 56, Garrett, with visitation one hour prior. Fr. Derrick Sneyd officiating. Visitation also from 2 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 29, 2010, at the funeral home. Burial will follow service in Catholic Cemetery, Fort Wayne. Memorials to St. Martin's Healthcare.
