Barry had two Masters Degrees--one in English and one in Biology. After teaching for many years and serving as Music Director at Roger Bacon HS in Cincinnati, he decided to head for a warmer climate. Barry moved to San Diego in 1985, taking a teaching position at La Jolla Country Day School. He worked there as both the AP Biology teacher and also as an AP English teacher. Barry enjoyed teaching and teenagers, becoming very popular with the students, both male and female. He spent the noon hours running the Bridge Club and teaching bridge to anyone interested. He even installed a piano in his classroom (he was an excellent classical pianist) and worked informally with some of the students who had an interest in classical instrumental music, especially piano and violin. Barry was diagnosed with Type I (juvenile) diabetes during the summer of 1955, and injected himself with insulin since that time. By his 40s the complications of the disease finally caught up with him. He was losing his eyesight (despite several surgeries), had received multiple coronary artery stents, and then developed renal failure. Barry chose not to continue the fight, refusing both dialysis and kidney transplant.
