Paul W. Haverkos

June 30, 1926 - July 16, 2020

Paul W. Haverkos, age 94, of Loveland. Beloved husband of 58 years to the late Pauline (nee Morris) Haverkos. Loving father of Mark Haverkos (Connie), Julianne Haverkos, Jeffrey Haverkos and StephenHaverkos (Edna). Proud grandfather of Chaske Haverkos, Mehdi Alavi, Samuel Haverkos and Alysha, Beatriz and Jacob Haverkos. Passed away July 16, 2020.

Paul was born in Oldenburg, Indiana, June 30, 1926; he was the third of Ben and Anna Haverkos’s 5 children. He was a hard-working man on the family farm. He was also drawn to school and sports, earning a perfect attendance award for grades K-8. He played baseball, basketball and football at Batesville High School and continued on to Ball State University where he played football. He continued playing baseball in the summers earning extra money for college. He even tried out for the Cincinnati Reds and was one of the last pitchers cut.

He served our country in the Korean War from 1951-53. When he returned, he got a job teaching math at Woodward High School: This was the beginning of a 32-year career as a math and science teacher. WHS is also where Paul met Latin teacher Pauline Morris; they fell in love and were married in November 1954. Shortly after, they moved to Arnold Lane in Loveland, where they raised 4 children. Paul was always present for his family, tutoring his children with the patience of a saint and teaching them how to play baseball and basketball. He would hit fly balls to them on summer evenings until it was too dark to see the ball. He also taught them to garden and take care of the home, using them for home maintenance jobs, from weeding in the garden to putting on a new roof. He attended every school activity and game each of them participated in and coached little league baseball for many years. He was the foundation upon which the family and each of its members was built, a foundation of great strength with the sole purpose of helping each to be a caring, constructive, happy, spiritual person able to serve others for the greater good.

In 1972, Paul left Woodward, finishing his teaching career at Sycamore High School where he taught Physics until his retirement in 1986. Paul ran into his former students hundreds of times during his years in retirement; invariably, he would remember each and something personal about them. On many occasions, he would be out to breakfast after church on Sunday and would go to pay his bill only to discover that someone had paid for his breakfast—a former student giving back.

Paul lived on Arnold Lane for 63 years, the remainder of his adult life. Paul had a genuine care and concern for each person he met and relished his connections with all of the people in his life. In retirement, he visited Bonnie Lynn Bakery each morning to have coffee and a honey crunch. The conversation and connection he had each morning along with the donut contributed to his longevity and quality of life.

Paul was a devout Catholic and long time parishioner at St. Columban Parish while raising his children, later in life he was a committed member of Good Shepherd Parish.

Paul was a lifelong Reds fan; through the good years and the not-so-good ones, he watched or listened to the games regularly and was a student of the game.

Family will receive friends Thursday, July 30 from 6-8 PM in the Tufts Schildmeyer Family Funeral Home, 129 N. Riverside Dr., Loveland, OH 45140. Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday, July 31 at 10 AM at Good Shepherd Catholic Church, 8815 E. Kemper Rd., Cincinnati, OH 45249. Interment Gate of Heaven Cemetery.
