James Powell Weeks, Ph.D., 54, of Harpers Ferry, W.Va., formerly of Dalton, died Saturday.
He is survived by his wife, Beth Margaret Kubly.

Born June 24, 1950, in Scranton, he was the son of Catherine Powell Weeks of Waverly and the late L. James Weeks. He was a 1968 graduate of Abington Heights High School and received his B.A. in history and M.A. in journalism from Pennsylvania State University. He received his M.S. in library science from the University of Pittsburgh, and his Ph.D. in history from Penn State University.

He was initially employed in Cleveland as an archivist for a private collection. Subsequently, he held various positions in the field of continuing education at Indiana University of Pennsylvania, Penn State, York Campus; Mont Alto, and state college campuses.

He was a gifted writer, researcher, editor and scholar. Over the years, he produced many articles in a broad variety of publications, ranging from Sports Illustrated to scholarly journals. His Ph.D. studies focused on the Civil War. He published his doctoral research through Princeton University Press as the book, "Gettysburg: Memory Market and an American Shrine." He served as a fellow at the papers of the Abraham Lincoln Project, Springfield, Ill. He then taught history at Penn State and the University of Scranton. Last year, he became the editor of the "Civil War Times."

Also surviving are two sisters, Dr. Janet Weeks, of Dalton, and Judith Comerford, and her husband, Jack, of Glenburn; a nephew, John James Comerford; a niece, Elizabeth Kathleen Weeks, and two aunts, Mrs. Fred Cox, of Scranton, and Mrs. Eva Powell, of Deltona, Fla.; an uncle, retired Capt. Paul A. Weeks, of Cape Coral, Fla.

He was a quiet, scholarly and gentle man with a wonderful sense of humor. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
