Ann Coury

Our teacher, Miss Coury, passed away on January 7, 2012.  The girls who were in her Home Economics class will remember her well and fondly.  Before reading her obituary, probably few of us knew of her philanthropic efforts.

Ann Coury, 83, formerly of West Scranton, died Saturday evening at the Kingston Commons.

Born in Scranton on Nov. 29, 1928, daughter of the late Ralph and Lillian (Labeba) Tulaney Coury, Ann was a graduate of Central High School, class of 1946. In 1957, she earned her bachelor's degree in education from Marywood College. A lifelong schoolteacher, she last taught in the Abington Heights School District. She was also a member of both St. Ann Maronite and St. Joseph Melkite churches, both in West Scranton.

Ann had an enormous heart, donating much of her time, energy and money toward numerous philanthropic efforts. She regularly read for the blind and, after 30 years of spending her summers volunteering in Lourdes, France, she received an award for her years of dedicated service. An avid sewer, her favorite hobby was needlepoint stitching. A loving sister, aunt and friend, she will be dearly missed.

She is survived by many beloved nieces and nephews.

She was also preceded in death by her brothers, Joseph, John, George, Mansore "Manny" and Edward Coury; and her sister, Marcia Coury,

Private Mass of Christian Burial will be Wednesday in St. Ann Maronite Church, West Scranton, to be celebrated by the Rev. Alex J. Hazzouri. Interment will follow in Sacred Heart Parish Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Ann's name to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place Memphis, TN, 38105.
