Larry Charles "Cookie" Cookman

February 24, 1949 - August 11, 2020

After surviving a derecho Monday, August 10, Larry Charles “Cookie” Cookman, 71 of Coralville, IA, formerly Clear Lake, passed away Tuesday, August 11, 2020, due to complications from COVID-19 and Agent Orange, at his home. He passed peacefully surrounded by his family. Larry was born February 24, 1949, in Mason City, IA. He was the son of Daniel and Veronica “Agnes” Cookman.

Graveside services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, August 17, 2020 at Memorial Park Cemetery in Mason City, IA, with final salute and military honors provided by the Clear Lake VFW Post 4868. Social distancing measures will be observed. There will be a celebration of life in Iowa City at a later date to be determined.

In lieu of customary remembrances, memorials may be made to either honorflight.org or hawkeyewrestlingclub.com in Larry’s name.

Since Larry only wore a tie once there are no ties allowed. In true Cookie fashion, please wear one of his favorite sports teams (Cubs, Raiders, and Iowa Hawkeyes), Hawaiian shirts, Harley Davidson, or the color green.

Larry graduated from Clear Lake High School class of 1967. Upon graduating, he enlisted in the United States Air Force and fought in the Vietnam War from 1968-1969. He then returned to attend the University of Northern Colorado and furthered his education at the University of Iowa.

Larry was an elementary school teacher, painter, and worked for the University of Iowa Athletic Department where he retired in 2010.

Larry enjoyed watching the Iowa Hawkeyes and had a close relationship with the wrestling team. Larry also was a fan of the Raiders (even though he was a shareholder of the Green Bay Packers). Most of all, he enjoyed watching the Chicago Cubs and got to see them win the World Series in 2016, FINALLY! He thoroughly enjoyed Harley Davidson motorcycles, Corvettes, and NASCAR. Larry always had a need for speed. He collected motorcycle license plates from everywhere he traveled, including international. Later in life, Larry loved browsing the “inner web” and being infamous for commenting “luv u brats” on Facebook.

Larry was blessed to spend his life with his loving wife Angie, who selflessly devoted herself to caring for him, loving and supporting him unconditionally.

Larry is survived by his wife Angie Cookman, brother Les (Sandy), sister Cindy (Paul), his children, Paula (Shawn), Kirsten, Amanda, and Maddy, and grandchildren, Taylor, Blair, Diamond, Lidiya, Deiandre, last but not least his side kick, Dwight “Knuckle Head.”

He was preceded in death by his parents.
