BRENT ELWOOD JOHNSTON Brent Elwood Johnston passed away peacefully at his home with those he loved, Michael, Karyn and Wayne, from lung cancer on August 18, 2023. Brent was born to loving parents Elwood and Cleone Johnston on November 15, 1946. He was later joined by his brother Stephen Johnston, sisters, Sharon Hamblin, Kathleen Abbott and Teresa Johnston. It was discovered early in his life that Brent had a gift for music. It radiated in his very soul. He began taking piano lessons at the age of six and was teaching piano to others at the age of twelve. He loved playing the organ and gave organ lessons at the age of fourteen. If Brent could hear it he could play it. His talent soared. He played for countless church meetings, funerals and events. It thrilled dad, when he sang, to have Brent accompany him. At the age of fifteen Brent won the Farm Bureau Talent Contest in Utah and traveled back east to compete where he took 2nd place in the nation. Brent graduated from Clearfield High School and attended Weber State University and the University of Utah expanding his music. He took piano lessons from Fredrick Dickson (UofU) and organ lessons from Alexander Shriner (Tabernacle Organist). Brent traveled the United States accompanying Melba Niles and Robert Peterson performing concerts. He also performed in seven tours of USO shows traveling across the world from 1968 to 1975. Three tours were over Christmas to Vietnam. He performed in Cambodia, Guam, All the pacific military bases and throughout Europe. In 1985 Brent moved to Alpine Wyoming joining the Clinger Family, Dallas, Ann, Michael and Karyn in their hotel business The Nordic Inn. This was a treasured relationship that lasted the rest of his life. Brent taught piano lessons at Western Wyoming College and in 1987 he was able to open his restaurant called Brentovens at the Nordic Inn. Brent was a great chef and known for his pumpkin soup and cod parmesan. In 1990 Brent accomplished his dream of performing at Carnegie Hall in NYC. This was a time he would never forget. For over thirty years each fall Brent traveled to New York to take piano lessons from Seymour Bernstein. Brent always was learning. With the harsh winters of Wyoming the Clinger family and Brent lived in New Zealand during the winter months with the last couple of years being in Portugal. They loved this time together traveling and experiencing the beautiful countries. The Clingers and Brent worked hard during the summers, seven days a week, providing a wonderful experience for tourists, friends and family at the beautiful setting of the Nordic Inn and Brentovens in Alpine Wyoming. Brent had a gift of loving everyone, being kind and generous to all he met. He loved his family, extended family, and friends dearly. His love and music will carry on in our hearts. With grateful hearts we extend our deepest love and appreciation to Mike, Karyn and Wayne for the loving care and joy they brought into Brent’s life. With Brent’s wishes he did not want a lot of fuss. That’s him! He didn’t want a viewing or funeral. A graveside service will be held at the Clinton, Utah Cemetery at a later date.
