Bill - Clark's was never by Shaker Square, it was at the corner of Lee and Cedar and now is part of the Cedar Lee theaters.

As a teacher in the district, I still go to the high school for meetings and think about the good old days.
For any of you who want trivia, the high school has really changed. For one thing, the girls's pool is covered up and has classrooms there. Heights has changed into 5 small schools and has built on inside to separate each school. The library is now on the first floor where the old business classes were (typing for one). The choir is still on the fourth floor but since the fire, lots of pictures were detroyed and there are two rooms upstairs.
There are no more up and down staircases. There is a social hall, but I don't know if it is still called the Tiger's Den. Maybe Irma McQueen would know. The courtyard is still the same but when you come into the building there aren't two classrooms. I remember my homeroom with Mrs. Shtull was on the right side when you came in and now that is an office. Across there is an open area with no classes. If I can think of more, I will add later.
I am checking into finding which teachers are still alive and in Cleveland. Paul Wisely our unit principal is still living nearby as he is involved with the teacher's credit union. I know that Jim Cappeletti and Pappy Mann are also still around. Mrs. Rabinsky (English) also is still living in University Heights and very involved with Holocaust activities.

Sue...

Did some digging 'cause I KNEW there was a Clark's at Shaker Square. Turns out there were 14 Clark restaurants in the Cleveland/Akron/Erie area.

Wasn't there a Clark's Restaurant somewhere around the intersection of Euclid and Superior? I might have the exact streets wrong, but I think it stayed around quite a while after the Cedar-Lee Clark's left.
I thought there might have been a Clark's downtown, as well.

What/where/how/when/why ... fire was in the school?

There was a Clarks at that corner as well as a childrens store called.....Merry Go Round. It was on the leftside of the street going down Superior and there was an International House of Pancakes on the right, next to the gas station.

Steve:

I used to LOVE those Royal Castle Burgers. And here's a post script: The owner still owns a number of the locations in Greater Cleveland, lives in south Florida, is around 88 years old, going strong and has done VERY well for himself. And he's a very nice guy too boot.

Shelley Hornik (Lloyd)

OK Jim,
Let's have Royal Castle burgers for some of the appetizers, and Humphrey's popcorn balls, and taffy as treats. AND an ice cream bar using East Coast Custard (the recipe from Euclid Beach). AND Birch Beer...

And coconut bars too...

Val Iberall (O'Connor)

My husband and I have been eating the Humphrey's popcorn balls all week and I had some of the taffy yesterday. It's really good and very enjoyable eating it. Been thinking of smashing up a couple of the balls and melting chocolate over them and making a bag of their chocolate drizzle popcorn that they sell. Has anyone tried it?

Clark's was definitely at Shaker Square and became Revco (CVS) and there was there was one on Euclid/Superior (and/or Taylor) in East Cleveland that was renamed 'O'Lark's'.

South Taylor Rd. has such great memories. I used to love
Drexler Drugs right on the corner of Cedar & Taylor. They
made the best cherry cokes & root beer floats. We used to
spend hours sitting on their revolving stools at the soda
fountain. A few doors down was Irv's if you wanted the best steakburger in town. Irv would always greet you
with a big smile wearing his stained white apron. Walking back toward Taylor School, who could stop from going into Harry's for the jumbo dill pickles in the big glass jars, or of course Lax & Mandels for a famous coconut bar or Russian Tea Biscuit.

Heights Variety was great...from candy to goldfish to
parakeets, they had it all.

Also have great memories of Tom's sports & crafts. It was
the store that had the most fascinating train sets going
in all directions in his huge front windows. I must have spent hundreds of dollars on all his plastic model airplanes, cars, & boats. Wouldn't mind having all that cash back for college expenses!

And don't forget that Sohio gas station across from Faraghers (where Scott worked).

Shelley:

Wouldn't that be great. I asked him once, and to this day I don't think he's ever given out the Birch Beer recipe. Although I rarely eat them, I think the old Royal Castle Burger's bear some resemblance to the White Castle burgers of today.

Speaking of memories, anyone remember the 5 & Dime at Cedar Center. Walking home from Wiley, we would stop and get penny candy. For 5 cents you could get these red licorice rolls (5 or 6 in a roll); also giant chocolate cookies at Davis Bakery or coconut bars. I have yet to find a bakery here in Arizona that makes coconut bars like that. If anyone has a recipie similar to those, let me know. I love to bake, and always try to find recipies that remind me of those days.Of course now, not supposed to eat all that stuff (too many calories)......

Heights Variety sold 2 cents boxes of snaps which was Licorice that had a weird soap after taste... The ones I found at Heinines (still cant spell) were not the same... Fairport has been closed for a long time....

Wow... What great memories.. Here are my contributions...

One of the many Clark's was definitely at Shaker Square... (later became the Red Bull Inn and then burned in the '70's) I used to have supper at the Shaker Square Clark's on a regular basis w/ my Grandfather.

The Cedar Lee Clark's became Inman's and then "Earth by April"... a vegetarian restaurant. That space is now part of the Cedar Lee theater.

White Castle is a good approximation of Royal Castle as far as burgers go. No more birch beer, though. I remember a frosted mug for a nickel.

Jewish Family Services is one of my friendly business competitors and fellow member of our trade association. I always attend the meetings JFSA hosts because Lax & Mandel Russian Tea biscuits are always served. Remember their pumpernickle raisin bread? We used to get a hot loaf early Sunday mornings... The Best!

I drove by East Coast Custard in Brunswick last night.... Yikes... CLOSED! You were right, Lesley. There is another seasonal one in Parma Hts that opens in March... In an old Arby's (or Roy Rogers?) on Pearl Rd.

I spent a lot of time on S Taylor working at the Sohio. The Dedreaux had great steaks... Faraghers's was a hot spot. I still remember "Eleanor"... the impossibly red haired clerk at Fairport Bakery. I was addicted to their poppy seed hard rolls. Sadly, Fairport is gone. So is the Sohio... now a car wash.

I bought my first bb gun from Tom Wood at "Sports & Crafts'... a politically incorrect path I still follow... Remember golfers... If God had wanted man to use clubs, He wouldn't have given us firearms!

If you hung out at Faragher's at all, you would remember my mother Essie......who was the manager and booked all the talent for the back room.

Louy:

If you see classmates on Classmates.com who haven't signed on here, send them a note with this website address. I have written many of them, but maybe a prodding from you will get them to sign on. In fact I encourage everyone who's on this site to do the same thing on Classmates, Facebook, etc.

I have a fabulous coconut bar recipe that Janice Basilone (Hundt) gave me when we were in college. They taste EXACTLY like the ones from the old bakeries. I'll see if I can dig it out. I wonder what Jan is doing?

I too have a recipe for coconut bars. It's not hard to
make. The secret behind the Davis Bakery coconut bars is that they freeze the cake before putting the chocolate and
cocnut on them. (That came from my husband's family as one
of the original Davis brothers married his aunt.
Now the only retail outlet is on Chagrin Boulevard and the pastry doesn't taste the same.)

Bill
My apologies for not knowing that there was more than one Clark's restaurant. I do remember that Inman's went into Cedar Lee later.

I also remember South Taylor with Fairport Bakery, the Sabra (owned by Rachel Rosenfeld's parents), Irv's and Lax and Mandel. Only Lax and Mandel is now at Cedar and Green.

Louie, my email isn't working right now but I got yours and I worked on them so check it out now and see if all the homerooms are correct now. Thanks for telling me some were missing.

I'm salivating reading about all the yummy treats from the olden days. I think it would be a great idea to have some of those in kiosks at the reunion.

I had an interesting encounter with Larry Shyatt recently. I read in the Orlando paper that he had become the Asst. Coach (I think) of the Florida Gators basketball team (he moved from Clemson U). Then I saw there was going to be a gathering to raise money for Hillel at U of F at someone's house here and he was going to be the guest. So, I showed up and when he came in, he looked at me very confused, I'm sure, wondering where he knew me from. I told him I was from Hts. High and we had a good laugh and caught up on 40 years in about 10 minutes.

I e-mailed Rachel Rosenfeld and asked her to join the site, but she didn't respond about that. She lives in Ariel in Israel. I hope to see her when I'm there in April.

I really can't remember a lot of those restaurants, etc. I guess I had my alzheimers very early......

I think Cedar Center is pretty much torn down, at least the last time I was there in September. At the same time, after looking at everyone's pictures on the website back in September when I signed up, I was at Giant Eagle and saw a face I had just seen on the web site, but didn't remember who it was. So, I stopped him, and it was Tom Mart!! We had a nice conversation, again catching up on the last 40 years in 10 minutes.

This is lots of fun!!

Debbie

Sue...

No apologies necessary. Who knew there were so many Clark restaurants in Cleveland?

Anyone...

Besides Fat Molly's, Faragher's and the Agora what were some of the names of the clubs/venues where bands played? I remember the bands, but not the venues.

Also, did anyone besides me and a few of my reprobate friends go to The Library bar to down mass quantities of 3.2 beer? The Library was this old house east of the CSU campus on Prospect between 36th and 40th streets. You could see the old Cleveland Arena on Euclid from the parking lot.

Debbie-rachael broke down and finally signed on to our site. thanks to a lot of people e-mailing her(jewish guilt still works) she became part of the hts. family again. It's funny how as i read all our memories it reminds me of my parents growing up on Kinsman and how they use to take 2 steercars to get to school-so i guess we have become our parents!!!
