I met Joel in our Latin class in 8th grade. Unlike me, he didn't seem excited to learn Latin. Can you imagine? As the semester went on, I saw that Joel really didn't want to be in Latin and really didn't like the teacher. He was the first student I had met who said he wouldn't go up to the blackboard to conjugate a verb. He actually said, "No, I'm not going up there." And despite Mr. Willard's pleas and demands, he never did. I later got to know Joel as a great dance partner who made me laugh a lot. I send my condolences to his family and friends.
