Joyce E. Mickam (Schulz)

On Sunday, Oct. 6, Joyce Schulz passed away at the age of 77 at her home in Manchester. She was born in Cleveland, Ohio in 1936; the only child of James and Ethel Mickam. During her early youth, she was raised in Bridgeport, Alabama, before returning to Cleveland, where she graduated from Collinwood High School, Fenn College, and the Huron Road School of Nursing. As a Registered Nurse, she served as the Assistant Head Nurse in the Surgical Ward at Huron Road Hospital in Cleveland. While there, she met her future husband, Klaus, who was a Resident of Cardiology. Joyce was married in 1958, and spent her first two years with her husband in Berlin, Germany and Browns Mills, NJ.

Between 1959 and 1966, they had four children, and settled in Ocean Township, where they resided for 30 years. She volunteered for numerous causes and organizations over the years, and was a longtime member and past president of the Asbury Park Woman's Club and of the Lutheran Church of the Atonement in Asbury Park. Joyce loved to travel, garden, read, watch movies, and play Bridge with her friends, but nothing brought her more joy than the company of her children and grandchildren.

Joyce was preceded in death by her husband of nearly 50 years, Dr. Klaus Schulz, in 2008. She is survived by her four children, daughter Heidi and her husband David of Boston, Massachusetts; son John and his wife Melissa of Bettendorf, Iowa; son Ted and his wife Heather of Freehold; and son Chris and his wife Lorrie of Point Pleasant Beach. She is also survived by her eight grandchildren, John, Kristen, Annika, Brian, Steven, Mackenzie, Jason and Luke.

Relatives and friends are invited to call from 2 to 4 p.m. & 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 10, 2013, with a memorial service at 7:30 p.m. at the O'Brien Funeral Home, 2028 Hwy. 35 at New Bedford Road, Wall.
