Clay's obituary from the Houston Chronicle (July 17, 2005):
CLAYTON A. UMBACH III, retired Navy Commander, joined his father in Heaven after dying of natural causes. Clay was born in Houston on October 27, 1955. He graduated from Texas A&M University in 1978 and was commissioned into the Navy where he served for 20 years as an aviator & flight instructor, with offices in the Pentagon.
He was preceded in death by his father, Clayton A. Umbach, Jr. and survived by his mother, Patricia Umbach; sisters, Alice Davis and husband Jeff, Ellen Herrick and husband Donald and his children Andrew and Helen; niece, Alexandra Lee Davis; nephews, Daniel Wilson Davis and Brooks Clayton Herrick.
Military graveside services will be held in his honor 10:30 AM, Monday, July 18th at Houston National Cemetery(10410 Veterans Memorial Drive, Houston, TX) with Father Jim Payne officiating. In lieu of flowers, please make contributions in his name to Texas A&M Corps of Cadets, 401 George Bush Drive, College Station, TX 77840-2811.
I served with Clay in the Navy, both in VT-27 as instructors and then at the Chief of Naval Aviation Training as Standardization instructors, both in Corpus. VT-27 is having a reunion next month and I was trying to find him. Much to my dismay I found this article. I can't tell you how much time and trouble Clay and I got into together. If there is a family member who wishes to attend the reunion for Clay, I am sure they will be more than welcome. My contact info is kblohm@stx.com.
How do you say goodbye to someone like Clay? Fair winds my friend.
