Philip James Hitchens 69, of Palm Beach Gardens passed away on December 28, 2013. Philip was a graduate of the US Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point, NY. He served a long career as an officer in the US Merchant Marine sailing for a number of US Flag carriers traveling to every corner of the globe. He also served in the US Naval Reserve rising to the rank of Commander. Philip will be greatly missed by his loving and devoted wife of 45 years, Sue; his son Brian and wife Erin, son Doug; mother Marilyn B. Hitchens; brothers Ralph and Jay; sister Susan; grandchildren Briana and Gabriel

My beloved older brother Phil died at the age of 69 from mesothelioma (asbestos poisoning) in December of 2013. Phil enlisted in the US Navy after graduation from Academy High, and then attended the US Merchant Marine Academy. He worked for many US flag carriers as a ship's officer, retiring shortly before his untimely death. He saw most of the world, something for which I truly envied him. "Home is the sailor, home from the sea . . ."
