Micheal Lee Grant

Houston - Micheal Lee Grant was born on August 31, 1951 in St. Joseph, Missouri. At the age of two he was adopted by Roy Lee and Pearlie Mae Grant. He grew up in Columbia, Missouri. At an early age he knew God for himself and was a member of Fifth Street Christian Church, until he made the move to Texas in 1984. He was a proud graduate of Hickman High School class of 1969. He believed in the power and importance of education, and graduated from the University of Missouri where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Social Work and a Master's degree in Public Health Education. Micheal held various jobs throughout his career but frequently shared his fondest memories of Mid Missouri Mental Health Center, Super X Drugstores and American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees Union. He had an entrepreneurial spirt, was the co-owner of G &G mowing and Mr. Grant's Smoke Easy. In March 1972 Micheal married the love of his life Olivia. He was looking forward to celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary next year in grand style. He truly loved his wife through sickness and in health. They have two amazing daughters Rev. Michelle Grant and Dr. Marla Fielder. Micheal bragged about his children and family often, to friends and strangers alike. In 1984 Micheal made the move to Texas ahead of his family for better opportunities at Drugs For Less in Duncanville, TX. The family followed in the summer of 1985. He had a passion for justice, equality and employee protections. Through his work as a business manager for AFSCME, he was instrumental in hundreds of employees of the City of Dallas receiving years of rightfully earned overtime pay. As a freelance researcher and writer, he wrote many articles on various health topics for the Dallas Weekly Newspaper. While in Dallas, in his spare time he enjoyed spending time with his masonic brothers at Kind David Lodge #151 PHA and singing in the male chorus at St. Philips Missionary Baptist Church. In 2013 Micheal decided that Houston, TX is where he would retire. As age and health conditions began to catch up with him, he decided to fight back and start a water aerobics class. He taught class several times a week at The Mansions at Hastings Green Senior Apartment Community. When he was no longer able to teach, the members kept the program going. Micheal was a fighter and was often described as a "tough old bird". Every time he was faced with a health crisis, he found the strength and grit to fight another round. He loved to read, write, talk politics, research history and religion. Micheal was an avid football fan he loved his Missouri Tigers and his Kansas City Chiefs. Micheal was a member of Living Faith Baptist Church and enjoyed fellowshipping as often as he could.
