
Douglas D. Miles passed away suddenly of a massive heart attack on July 10, 2021 at his home in Lenexa, KS. Doug was born in Columbia, MO on April 21, 1951 to the late James and Margie Miles, longtime residents of Columbia, MO.
In his youth, Doug was very active in the local tennis teams with Coach Odor in Columbia. About the time Doug received a driver’s license, he fulfilled a long held aspiration by earning solo flight status at age 16.
Doug was in the Hickman high School class of 1969 when he entered the United States Air Force. Initially, Doug was an aircraft mechanic and later a munitions specialist on B-52 bombers while in Guam. Doug also volunteered and served a year in Viet Nam, while stationed out of Richard Gebaur Air force base in Kansas City. While in the Airforce, Doug earned his civilian flight instructor certificate and spent many flight hours teaching flying to others to earn extra money while in the service.
After completing his 4 years enlistment, he left the service and followed his passion as a successful corporate pilot flying a variety of turbo prop and business jets for Garney Co, a large construction company in Kansas City for many years. One of Doug’s memories while flying corporate, was flying, then senator, Bob Dole.
In 1981 Doug married Cindy Boos from Severance Kansas. They were blessed with 2 sons, Ryan, of Lenexa, Ks & Shawn, currently completing his second degree in Electrical engineering in Denver, CO.
Doug was always an avid supporter for his son’s soccer teams, attending numerous games with them from grade school thru college. Doug spent many hours enjoying water sports and snow skiing with his sons, too.
In the eighties, Doug was hired by the Federal Aviation Administration becoming an Airline Principal Operations Inspector. After many years with the FAA, he left to become an Airline Captain on DC-9 and Boeing 737’s with a local start up airline.
Doug is survived by his widow, Kay Earnshaw-Hobbs Miles of Lenexa, KS and his 2 sons, Ryan & Shawn Miles, 2 Granddaughters, Lydia and Ava Miles, his brother, Gene Miles of Longbeach, Washington, and his sister and her husband, Marlene & Brian Frohmuth of Montgomery, TX.
A memorial zoom service was held at Doug’s home in Lenexa, KS.
