Derek was a quiet person with a kind soul and a memorable smile. He is survived by his parents Evelyn and Daryl Wright, brothers Colin and Curtis (Bonnie), nieces Bowen, Casey, Brinley and Cooper. As a sports lover; hockey goaltending in particular, a memorial fund has been set up (by his fellow teammates, with the support of Derek's family) to support an underprivileged youth goaltender within the Comox Valley.
