Walter "Wally" Welbrock
January 4. 1945 - April 14, 2023

Wally had called me a while back and told said he was now living in Caldwell, Idaho  He had moved here from Costa Mesa to help care for his mother.   I understand she just passed away recently and that Wally passed away, last Friday, shortly afterwards  Wally had a long standing battle with cancer.

I do not except an obituary so encourage others to share information on work, hobbies, etc. that  they may have.            Larry M.

hi ken haley here, as been posted wally has died. great friend lived around the corner from each other in the fredom homes. meet in the 4th grade. like to share a couple of times we had . first all of his family were barbers,  mom , dad , uncle and wally. the first day he got out of barber school he gave me a call, do you want a hair cut? sure i mean his whole family were barbers. went to his moms house in the laundry room with not much light got hair cut. then his mom got home, thought she was going to have a heart attack, went to her shop and she gave me a buzz cut. got free hair cuts for years

one more thing. wally was a flight instructer. one day i was working at a small company between campus and birch st. all of a sudden fire trucks were going crazy went outside and looked across the street and a small single engine plane is setting in the dirt field. i look over and wally is standing next to a fireman, i go over ask him what up? he was flying the plane giving a student a lesson, and the engine stoped, he just cleared the power lines on bristol and made the landing in the field, the student never came back.  good guy tough loss...........ken

I talked with Wally 4-6 weeks ago when he called me to let me know his mother, Delores, had passed away. He moved up to Caldwell, Idaho along with the whole family, he was the caregiver for his mother. He took on less of the duties once she started declining & more care was needed.
Wally & I were somewhat related, my step grandfather & his grandfather were brothers. We were together at various family events over the years & he recently mailed me some photos he found of us together at about 3 years old.
He had developed some heart troubles the last few years & cancer was discovered when he was going through various tests. He swore his heart issues saved his life because the cancer was found. He was doing well & felt his health issues were behind him. Being a California guy, he missed his life there, told me it was beautiful in Idaho, too quiet for him, but they had a great healthcare system. Wally was in a quandary of what his next steps would be now that he wasn't caring for his Mom.
I was actually shocked when I heard of his death, he was ready to move on to the next chapter of his life. He did move on, but not as expected. I will miss him, May he rest in peace 🙏🏻❤️

I played Varsity Baseball with Wally.  He was friendly, approachable and a likable guy.  I was very impressed when he told me he had his own pitching machine and batting cage setup at his home and used it effectively to improve his batting average. That and the fact that kind of money for me in 1963 was hard to come by...which made it that much more impressive.

I also think that we all find 'the bottom of the 9th' is a date we would like to put off to another day. But there's a final note I'd like to make on Wally's behalf...one of my favorite lines from Field of Dreams delivered by Shoeless Joe Jackson to Midnight Graham..."you were good kid".  Goodbye Wally.
