
Charlie Childs of Oxford passed away October 29, 2016, at 72 years of age. Born and raised in Porterdale, Charlie was an outstanding football player with the Newton County High School Rams in 1960 – 1961. He enjoyed coaching PeeWee Football teams, hunting, fishing, golfing and loved the Georgia Bulldogs. Charlie retired from Dekalb County School System. He was a very private person and will be missed by all who knew and loved him. Preceding Charlie in death were his parents, Arthur (Snooks) and Mary Lou Childs; brother, Jack Childs; and brother-in-law, Phil Peters.
Survivors include his sisters and brother-in-law, Judy and Tim Hopkins of Monroe, Dotty Childs of Porterdale; nephews, Pete, Wes, and Joey Peters; niece, DeeAnn Weber; great-nieces and great-nephew, Emma, Zelda, Tallulah, Maddie Mae, Georgia, Haylee and Tripp.
A Memorial Service for Charlie will be held Tuesday, November 1, 2016, 2:00 PM, at the Chapel of Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 1215 Access Road, Covington, with Pete Peters, Joey Peters and Wes Peters officiating. Interment will follow at a later date in Lawnwood Memorial Park. Friends may visit with the family two hours prior to the service on Tuesday, from 12:00 Noon – 2:00 P.M.

Charlie,
I remember when you met my future husband right after we became engaged. After some polite conversation and getting to know each other, you told him what would happen to him if you ever heard that he had mistreated me. I was surprised at that but I assumed that you wanted him, since he was not a hometown boy, to know that people in Covington and Porterdale didn't take that sort of stuff lightly.
You were funny and always very kind to me and also a very good on the football field.
