Joe was a good friend of mine. He was one of the more quiet guys at school but he was really a great guy. He was a talented mechanic and had a great understanding of electronics, a hobby we both shared. Joe had an old Mazda RX3 station wagon (mostly silver) that he rolled. No real challenge for Joe, who used jacks to push the roof back out. I never knew about the repair till he told me. Joe put the rotary engine in that thing. It was super light and crazy fast. It was a real sleeper and we used to smoke guys all the time drag racing at red lights. One night me and John ward snuck over to Joe's house to see if he could come out with us to have a couple of beers. We crawled in his window but this woke joes dad up. John and i each shoved our beer into a pair of nearby boots just as Mr potje opened the door and turned on the lights. We thought we got joe in trouble for coming over so late but mr Potje said he could go out with us. Joe turned around and proceeded to put his boots on, at which point the beer fell out and the bottles smashed on the floor right in front of his Dad! His dad just shook his head and laughed at us. Joe had a nice family and i remember he had a sister who was really nice.

That crazy old Mazda station wagon was a little like Joe himself. He wasn't the most flashy outspoken kind of guy but it was what was inside that made him important to me as a friend. He always had amazing insights about science, philosophy and life itself. Those of you who knew Joe will understand that Joe will always be remembered and missed.
