I went to work for Braniff International Airways in 1966 and spent 16 glorious years there. I started in Fleet Service at Dallas Love Field. I became a Cargo Serviceman in Miami for about a year, before transferring back to Love Field. Where I became a cargo supervisor. I became as customer service agent in Corpus Christi for about 9 months before transferring back to Love Field. I move into management about a month before we opened DFW. My last position was the Manager of Operations at DFW. I was laid off in February just before Braniff went filed for bankruptcy. I decided against going to work for another airline. I moved to Clearwater, Florida and managed a travel agency and work as a desk clerk at night at a beach hotel. I had more fun at the hotel and decided make that my next career. I became a hotel General Manager in less than 2 years. Three of us got together and decided to try our hand at hotel consulting. One of my partners got hurt in an accident and dropped out. The other one ran off to get married, and I went back to being a General Manager. My wife and I decided to resurrect the consulting company and off we went. We traveled the country from coast to coast. We got to see America first hand. We loved every minute. Then we got tired of all the traveling. My wife suggested we try self storage management. We were at Lake Tahoe at the time. We spent the next 6 years managing self storage facilities in Nevada. We decided to retire in February of this year and returned to our mobile home. That 'retirement' didn't last lost. We got bored, so off we went doing another hotel consulting project in Texas. That project is almost complete. Maybe we will try retirement again, or maybe will be off on another consulting adventure!

In 2014, once again we tried to semi-retire, and once again it didn't work. I love my beach, but how many beach walks can you take in a day? A gentleman asked us to take a look at his storage facility in Sanford, Florida and get back to him about what was wrong. We spent 2 days looking at the facility and the surrounding area. We gave him a detailed report. He immediately asked us to take over the management. We laughed at him. We told him he needed to start himself cleaning the place before we could take him seriously. He did, but we still didn't want to work but a few days a week. He had owned the facility for 2 years and the occupancy was always 62-64 percent. Finally he presented it as a challenge. My wife and I both love challenges, so we agreed to take over management. The deal was for 6 months. We went 10 % in occupancy. We agreed to stay another 3 months and the occupancy went up another 11%. We have agreed to stay until the end of 2105. It possible we may stay on until May of 2016. One of these we will retire again, at least semi-retire, I think! We may even do some traveling to Central America. As long as we remain healthy, you never know what our next adventure might be!

School Story

Tommy Downing, Judy Vinson, Mary Ann Tupin and myself put something to represent of our past, present, and future in an Ovaltin jar, then sealed it in wax, and buried it along a creek bank at Turtle Creek. Have to wonder if anybody ever found that jar!

The only thing that has changed for me is now I'm a widower after a 30 year marriage to my wife Linda. A Covid related heart attack last year took her life last year. She had a couple of procedures in the doctor's clinic previously to get better blood flow in her legs. The last one involved the femoral artery so that had to be done in the hospital. The operation was deemed a complete success. The hospital provides there own nurse. That nurse sits at the head of the bed to monitor the vital signs. That nurse had just come back from a vacation in Italy. She got infected with Covid-19 in Italy but didn't know it. She gave Covid to my wife but nobody knew it. The nurse tested positive for Covid the next week, but it was too late for my wife. The morning after they released my wife, she woke up early the next morning and said she was having difficulty breathing. I grabbed some oxygen and put it on her nose, but it was too late. I know she passed with her arms around my neck, but I called 9-1-1 and began pumping her chest until the Fire Medics took over from me. ....

I have been vaccinated. Check with me at the end of April. I may move out of the country, or maybe back to Texas!

Like many of you, I knew Jake from Preston Hollow thru Hillcrest.  Jake certainly had a lighter side to him. He could be commical and funny.  Above all, I remember Jake as a 'true warrior'.  I don't think Jake ever gave up.  That the memory I will keep of Jake.  I'm also sure a lot of us have memory of Jake we hold on too.  Jake was just somebody you never forgot.

I was thinking of Halloween past since Halloween was a few days ago. One that sticks out in my mind goes back to the 3 or 4 grade at Preston Hollow Annex. One, or several of the mom's, decided to put on a haunted house where they blind folded the kids and let them through a house and made them stick their hands in Jell-o and beams and called it 'other things'. It started at the front door and ended in the garage. It's was at Lee Simpson, Michael John Reeves, or Skipper Radke house or a combination of several.

I also remember trick or treating in the apartments a few blocks away. It was easier to get more candy in the apartments, which had 4 apartments behind every door, than go house to house. Some new, more expensive apartments were being built across Turtle Creek. I always ended the night over there. That's where I met Mary Martin (of Peter Pan fame). She would always invite us in for a chat. One time she was on the phone with her son. The next Halloween, of course I went back. Mary Martin asked if we remember the prior Halloween she was talking with her son. I said yes. She said this time her son was there for Halloween and he's in the living room and wants to meet you. Larry Hagman was on the couch and stood up and said "Hi kids".

Those were some of my fondest memories of Halloween.

Very sorry to hear of Judy's passing.  She was a sweetheart.  I never heard Judy say a unkind word to anyone in school.  RIP Judy knowing you are remembered as one of the good people in life.

Happy Birthday! Thinking back, we went to each other's birthday parties back in the day when we went to Preston Hollow Annex together. That was indeed a long time ago. Go out and celebrate your day.
