Former Educator Interred Today

Marvin Shields, a former local educator, was buried this morning in Chatsworth Heights Cemetery, Chatsworth.  He died Saturday morning in Chatsworth Health Care Center.

He was a life-long educator. He was the first principal of Eastbrook High School in Whitfield County. He also served principalships in Walker County, Beaufort, S.C., and at East Lake Junior High School, Chattnooga.

He was the author of the original Georgia schoolteacher's retirement plan and, in 1940, personally presented the plan to the Georgia General Assembly on the floor of the House.

Shields was a past president of East Lake Lions Club in Chattanooga and had served on the boards of directors of Murray County Family and Children's Services and Murray County Hospital.

He was a Sunday School teacher and a member of the board of deacons of Chatsworth First Baptist Church and had served as associate teacher of the Scrap Iron Sunday School Class of First Baptist Church of Dalton.

Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Jeanet Tucker Shields, Chatsworth; a daughter, Jane Shields and a son, David Shields, both of Los Angeles.

Three sisters, Mrs. Ruth Auerswald, Chattanooga; Mrs. Ed Glasgow, Leesburg, Fla., and Mrs. Macon West, Dalton.

Three brothers, Hoyt Shields, Dalton; John and W.H. Shields, both of Charlotte, N.C.; several nieces and nephews.
