Dear Classmates,
With a heavy heart I send this email to tell you that Susan Wendt Shoemaker died on Sunday, May 19th, peacefully at her home in Medford, Oregon, following a long fought battle with cancer. At our 60th reunion she was there in remission from a double mastectomy . She later developed colon cancer and was undergoing Chemo when she decided it wasn't helping and just made her sick. So, she stopped the Chemo and welcomed Hospice . With her when she died was Wendy Layne (Sali Arrasmith's daughter).
Susan and Sali lived next door to each other in Diablo and became best friends. Sali left San Ramon High after her sophomore year,but the friendship grew and
continued until their end. Sali had planned to come to our 60th reunion, but didn't make it, and a few days after our 60th she died from a sudden massive heart attack. Sali's daughter, Wendy had always considered Susan her second mom, as Susan never had any children.After Sali died, Wendy told Susan she was now number one mom. She and Susan developed a really close bond these last two years. Two weeks before Susan died, Wendy went up to Medford from her home in Loomis to be with her until the end.
Wendy is taking care of everything now. She told me that Susan was to be cremated. A Celebration of Life will be scheduled and she will let us know more later. Sympathy cards can be sent to her . Hopefully we'll get names and addresses where we can send donations in Susan's memory.

PS -- I know this is a longer "sad news" letter than I usually send out, but she was a good friend for so many of us, I just couldn't make it shorter. Also, Sylvia Hamblin, and Barbara Hann Ciukowski made a trip to Medford the end of April and spent the day with Susan. Susan's brother, Pete, who lives on Whidbey Island, Washington also visited.
