Were you there?
In the spring of 1971, the Davenport West boys' basketball team struggled. Their record had reached 7 wins against 11 losses. It looked like another forgettable season. Nearing tournament season, they were expected to exit early. Then, something extraordinary happened. Some passes were crisper than before. Some shots were more open. Coach Dave Wessel's zone defense began to work. They were more aware. They anticipated better. They knew each other better. They began to believe.
They weren't suddenly perfect, but the scrappy young Falcons grew up as a team, played as a team, and went on to win the next seven in a row--as a team. They defeated cross-town rival Central to start the playoffs, upset district rival Dubuque Wahlert to get to a berth at State, and then outshot, out-hustled, and out-believed powerhouse teams Waterloo West, Mason City, and Ottumwa, to earn the school's first ever State Basketball Championship.
Theirs was the story of the power of "team"; where chemistry triumphs over seemingly insurmountable odds. When it happens, it is one of sports' greatest lessons. They gave their coach, their school, and their fans an inspirational, storybook ending to a remarkable season. They gave themselves a legacy.
It was a fun ride.
