Thomas William Butcher, 60, son of Raymond Henry & Madge Marie (Williams) Butcher, was born November 16, 1952, in Davenport, Iowa. He passed away Tuesday, April 23, 2013, at the New Homestead in Guthrie Center, Iowa.
His early childhood years were filled with little league baseball and boy scouts. He graduated from Davenport West High School and pursued an education in music at Northwest Missouri State University. He received his BA degree in Music Education in 1975. He secured his first teaching position at Guthrie Center Community Schools the fall of 1975 where he taught grades 7-10. In 1978, he married Carolyn Ann (Purcell) Butcher. To this union, two daughters were born, Quinn Marie and Laine Elizabeth. He returned to Northwest Missouri State University to pursue a career in Guidance and Counseling. In 1985, he graduated with a Masters Degree in Guidance. In the fall of 1986, he secured a position with the Cumberland Massena Schools District and remained there for 16 years. In the fall of 2002 until 2010 he was grades 7-12 guidance counselor at Guthrie Center Community Schools where he retired after 29 years of teaching. Tom’s love for helping students and improving education were his lifetime goals.
A hobby of his was woodworking and he made several collectable pieces for family and friends He also enjoyed learning about the new technology for computers that would take place from year to year. Serving his church as church council president for 3 terms and various education committees were honors he fulfilled.
Tom is survived by his wife, Carolyn (Purcell) Butcher of Guthrie Center; Daughters, Quinn (Butcher) & Matty Farrington of Denver, Colorado, and Laine Butcher of Omaha, Nebraska. Brother, Mike & Dorothy Butcher of Arvada, Colorado; Sister, Marianne (Butcher) & Bill Bittner of Laguna Hills, California; and Uncle, Walt Butcher of Emporia, Kansas. He was preceded in death by his parents, Raymond & Madge Butcher.
