DAVENPORT — Jim Mensch 62, a resident of Davenport, died unexpectedly Thursday, May 5, 2016, after suffering an apparent massive heart attack.

A Celebration of Life gathering for Jim will be 4-6 p.m. Monday May 9, 2016, at the VFW Post 828, 101 S. Linwood Ave., Davenport. Everyone is invited to join the family to honor his memory. Following his wishes, the rite of cremation has been accorded, and private services will be held with immediate family per James wishes.

Halligan-McCabe-DeVries Funeral Home is assisting the family with services.

James Ray Mensch was born Sept. 18, 1953, in Mason City, Iowa, a son of Clarence and Hazel (Turbett) Wirtjes. He graduated from Davenport West High School.

He was united in marriage to Mary Evelyn “Evy” Lowe Schmitt on June 21, 1997. They enjoyed nearly 20 years of marriage.

Jimmy retired from the city of Davenport, where he served as sanitation engineer for many years.

Memorials can be made to the family for a memorial in Jim’s memory.

Those left to honor his memory include his wife, Evy; his children, Michael Schmitt (Amber Nolin), Mandi Schmitt (Josh Basting); his grandchildren, John, Dustin, Logan, Arianna, Kaleb, Kyle, Collin, Jacob, Jazamyne, Brendan and Jalynn; great-grandson, Isaac; adoptive mother, Dorothy Mensch; brothers, Gene (Ruth) Wirtjes, Wayne (Nancy) Wirtjes; sisters, Judy Taylor and Linda Kuiken; mother-in-law, Gladys Keller, Davenport; and many more family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his birth parents, Hazel and Clarence Wirtjes; adoptive father, Merle Mensch; and brothers, Bobby Dygert and Larry Wirtjes.
