Making our own music
Posted Wednesday, April 15, 2009 11:17 AM

I remember when...

The whole school acted as one when we were at lunch beating on the lunch tables. I don't know who started it, but it had a cool beat that we made using our fists and our palms slapping on top of the lunch tables to make this rhythm. It went like this (do it with me, now):

Fists, palms, fist, fist, palms, fist, fist, palms, palms, fist, fist, palms.

Good Grief, we drove "Ma" the lunch lady crazy and just about every other authority figure. But, you know what's cool about this memory? I've taught it to my daughter and she's teaching it to her friends, and another generation of music-makers has been born.

I remember in my freshman year (68-69) that we had an authentic jukebox in the cafeteria.  I don't remember if it played for free, or you had to put money in.  What I do remember is hearing Led Zeppelin play over and over again... "Whole Lotta Love" followed by "She's Just a Woman".  Maybe that's why I still love Zepplin today.

This was a form of "music", (and I made quite alot of music while I was at CHS).

I was called into Mr. Abdo's office for an "Editorial Meeting". As the editor of "The Crusader", I was required to submit my copy for "approval" prior to publication. It seemed that Mr. Abdo was quite upset over our "Senior Poetry" issue in April of '70. Jim Hanes had submitted a poem called "Help! I'm a Rock!" which contained references to Woodstock and being stoned. Was Mr. Abdo upset by this? No!

He wanted to rake me over the coals for daring to print Linda Isaacson's poem which contained the words:  "and they all shouted 'Take it off! Take it off! And the shame of it was-I did."   Which was not about taking off one's clothes, but cutting one's hair...in other words, conforming.

So, there I was, a mere High School Senior, trying to explain to a Dr. of Education the vagaries of poetic symbolism.

By the way....both poems ran in that issue.

Too funny.. I can still hear Stanley yelling " c'mon you guys.." as we sprinted to the cars at lunch, or any other time for that matter.....

I can remember two songs specifically that played out of the juke box in the cafeteria. One was "Cold Turkey" by John Lennon and "Mississippi Queen" by Mountain. Loud, too. No wonder I probably need a hearing aid soon. Somebody answer that damn phone! And to add on to Mr. Cameron's recollection of Officer Stanley "Allright Yuhas, what's your name?"

By the way, who put up the picture of me from I believe 5th or 6th grade? No wonder I never had any girlfriends!

Why do I not remember a juke box in the cafeteria 71-73 ? I remember everything else, but for the life of me cannot remember music blaring at lunch? Maybe too stoned to notice!

Ah the memories or lack of! LOL

But I do remember a certain individual OD'ing on Kings desk.

How you doing Johnny Baby! LOL

John, Your reference to Mountain's "Mississippi Queen" is what jogged my memory of a jukebox in the lounge. I didnt hang out there much- I smoked in the girls' bathroom between classes and left campus for lunch as soon as I got my first car- that postal blue, right hand side drive 1965 International Harvester mail truck that my dad picked up for me at an auction.  I gave Stanley so many fake names- Sandy Beach, Pearl Ring, Kim Novak...LOL. And you, not cute? Never! You were a doll, Johnny boy. And a darn nice guy too. Give LeeAnn my love.

The jukebox was how I learned to appreciate Motown, the Temptations "Can't Get Next To You" every day at lunch.

I remember in 1972, during that era when teachers were striking, half the student body left class and milled around in front of Crestwood. I think we were expressing our frustration at the prolonged strike. Anyway, the Dearborn Heights police showed up. Chuck Potter started jumping on top of a police cruiser, and was arrested.

BTW -- More than anyone else, Chuck contributed to our underage drinking, because the guy looked 18 and bought us so much beer at Tri-Daleys!

Hey Johnny - nice seeing you and Lee at Tanya's last weekend.  And Daisy sends her love ;)

I do not remember a juke box at all.  I remember the bike rack at Tri-Daly.  Who of us didn't sit on it and accost strangers walking by with "will you buy for us?"  If the guy was a real jerk, he would take your money and leave out the other door.  Wow, we needed more after school acitivites, don't you think??  And Chuck Potter?  Wow, yes, remember him. Love the visual Nick mentions of him jumping on a cruiser.  Very funny.  And poor Stanley.  All we had to do was mention a feminine hygiene problem and we were outta there.  Wonder how much they paid that guy.  Not enough.  There were just so many of us.  I remember my brother leaving school at 11:00 am because he was a senior while I was just arriving for the day as a freshman.  I remember Mr. Abdo catching me and my then boyfriend, Dana, who is now my husband, kissing in the hall.  He suspended us and called our parents.  But you could walk the halls stoned out of your mind and no one said a word.  We could write a book, couldn't we?

I do believe there was a juke box in the cafeteria. I remember it being in the south-west corner of the room.  I'm in security now and from time to time will do my Stanley impersonation "Ok Richards, what's your name" type thing. Funny the things you remember and that stand out from our younger years that don't really mean a thing. Ah, the bike rack at Tri-Daly's. Should be in the Smithsonian. All we needed was a 55 gallon drum, some newspapers and report cards to burn, and we would've been singing Stairway to Heaven, accoppella. Not to dispute Nick's recollection of the events of the teachers strike but my memory has the Wanamaker boys (Jimmy and Kenny) rocking the cops world in the circle drive. That might have included Chuck Potter also as they were all capable of rocking any car. But I also remember how funny it was as the cops attempted to exit their car everybody scattered except Kenny Wanamaker who kept rocking the car as one cop got his head banged on the roof while trying to get out. Kenny was lead away in handcuffs. He lived across the street from me and we all had a good laugh that night. My remember when story.......Any additions?

That was 71 Nick, not 72. I remember channels 2,4,7 were there. Channel 7 was interviewing Ken Korzynski. We were all out on the front lawn. Gary Sexton was like Crestwood's Abbie Hoffman, I believed he organized the walkout. He did most of the shouting out that day. He was also interviewed.  I was a freshman, but maybe somebody older may remember more.

I do know the next day everybody went to class except for me and a few. King called my mother and said we had a walkout here yesterday, and most all returned to school today but not your daughter. Man, next thing I know I'm out in the parking lot in some guy's van with Kathy Shorter. And I saw my mother cruising through parking lot. I said Oh S***!

She never saw me, but man did I get it when I got home that day. No such thing back when we were coming up about parents not being able to hit or yell at their kids. We got hit with anything they could grab within their reach, and it HURT!

And I remember Bobby Williams & Gary Hougland buying the most alcohol for most back then. Boonesfarm and Bud! .85 cents for GIQ 320z of beer. Don't remember what the Boones Farm was, but wasn't much more. Poor Tri-Daly's they got ripped off everyday.  Mike Minni was friends with a cashier there. I got Newports for free.

Does anybody know where Mike is?

This message is from jerry edwards who has now gone underground with timothy leary. I have read all of the chatter and i now wish to clear up the issue of the jupe box....... yes there was a jupe box, i know because i spent more time in the lunch room on detention than anyone else....that was my first point. The damn thing never worked but it was there.. so that ends that conversation. Second... who gives a rats ass who comes to the reunion... at our age it would just be nice to talk to people whether you Know them or not and who cares if their favorite song is "hammertime". More important where is phyliss ford for example that a good reason for a "chatter". Whatelse........I had lunch with linda wayne a few years ago shes great and has a great family.  In addition, I saw a picture of sandy moore from the yearbook, she hasn't changed a bit....and wasn't from the class of sixty-nine. Now this is chatter....Dennis Fraski lives in grayling and i miss gary lablanc he was a "best friend" I plan on attending this years reunion because pete & judy said I have to but doesn't mean I'm gona be funny or like it. Jerry Mathison is still not normal but he was from the class of 69, so see who cares... Did anyone think to invite gail fails... I'm tired gotta go

Well as much Dope as I smoked back then, I was always afraid to try Acid. ( Don't know why though, only just about choked a friend to death while on Mesc ) But what I'm going through right now Jerry. If I knew my heart was OK, wouldn't mind joining you & Timothy Leary and engage in a little bit. Hell, Who knows it might HEAL ALL.

LMAO

Yep, definitely a juke box in the cafeteria that sat next to one of the columns near the Gymnasium, but on the cafeteria side, of course. Randy Edwards was quite instrumental in keeping the quarters flowing along with his friends and we heard Baba O'Reilly and Pinball Wizzard, Black Dog, Stairway to Heaven and The Levy over and over and over. I sat with Rhonda and the girls and Randy hung with Mike, Doug, Darryl, Ron (Fred), Danny and several others. We had a lot of good memories, but the best thing is finding those individual friends and getting together. I hope to get with Rhonda soon and go see Mom Edwards. So... I will most likely also see Randy, Greg and Bobbi too. It's been way too many years.

As far as Stanley, I had him believing my name was Alice Cooper for several weeks and one day he called me by my name and stopped me dead in my tracks! There he stood with his copy of the year book. That poor man, how did he put up with us for so many years. Even after he knew my name I still went off campus, but... we were all a bunch of little rebels back then. School was a great time in many ways, but I wouldn't want to do it again. I went through it all over with my daughter. Things are getting crazy in schools.

OMG, that is not my senior picture, that was probably the worst picture I had. Oh well, doesn't really matter anyway, lol.

I'm just grayer and have more wrinkles and much thinner, so...and in need of a haircut, I am beginning to look like a hippie, hahaha!!!
