Am guessing the vast majority of the folks here are too young to remember the place.

But - just so as to confirm your memory....YES, I remember the Pool Hall very well. No one would ever confuse me with a "hustler," but I used to go there occasionally to hang around, play a little 8-ball, and smoke my Lucky Strikes (LSMFT lol) in public without being harassed. Most of my memories of the place go back to the early 60's - sound about right?

Maybe you remember some of the regulars there:

Danny Yate's (of course,) Porgie Bennet, the Labadie Bros. (Mike and Pooky,) Tom Smith (Charlotte's brother,) and a host of others. Those WERE the days my friend.

Regards,
No Wendy her name was Deanne Baker. Tom Messner had sent me a message because he read these comments and saw my profile page. He said his wife Kathy Balcer-Messner taught with her. Also said where she lives and they had not seen her in decades. I know I was stoned a lot back then but I didn't forget her name. LOL

We lived right behind the drive-in. I'll never forget standing in the street, watching the movie Clockwork Orange -- it was so weird because I couldn't hear the dialog! My friends and I would all sneek into the drive-in through a hole in the back fence -- my friend's yard was directly behind the theater. We would go up the embankement and sit on the old wood fence until the ushers ran us off! When we were little, I remember going to the show in the family station wagon -- all the kids were in our jammies -- with home made popcorn and Faygo Pop. If we were lucky, our folks would let us buy candy from the concession stand (Dots for me!). I still remember the ancient miniature train, the playground, and the lousy speakers that always fell off the car window!

Hello, Wendy --- Mr. Messner was our class sponsor all 4 years through our graduation in 76. So yes, he did return after the strikes. And I agree about your other favorites, great ladies. Mrs. Jaworski, paticularly, was my big fave. Wonderful person. Mrs. Howell was tough but fair and MADE me learn l literature -- I was also on the yearbook staff my senior year. Miss Balcer was my sister Sally's (70) fave as well. I was in contact with the Messners last year before the reunion and for a little bit after, I expect I will be in contact with them again soon, hopefully to get them to at least the Open House, if not the reunion, next year.

RE: Some Teachers Missing

Hey Linda, the missing art teacher, are you sure you have it right? The only 2 I knew there were Miss Balcer and Miss Sokol. I took every art class offered at Crestwood and 4 independent studies. Just from what you said, I think it sounds a lot like Miss Balcer (now Mrs. Messner). Miss Sokol came over from Haston with our freshman class. They were 2 of my favorite teachers along with Mrs. Jaworski and Mrs. Howell. English and Art were my favorite classes. Miss Balcer used to confiscate my smokes and return them at the end of the period with a warning of "Next time their mine!", and she was in her little office off the art room puffing away herself. I'm not sure who taught art after the "big strike" as I know her and Mr. Messner did not return, but her and Miss Sokol were the two art teachers at least through 1974. Miss Balcer used to have me help other students and then she would say "where's your project?" I always ended up getting mine done, but... she made me laugh, she was so much fun! I thought a lot of Mr. Messner too, but I only had him 1 semester for typing. I was thrilled when I heard they had married!

I remember Sharon Bokuniewicz sneaking me and Donna in there in the trunk. Only when she closed the trunk door I panicked yelling open this door, I'LL PAY!!!

Donna could of cared less. I felt like I had been locked in a casket or something.

The reality of it was you could walk in from the exit and nobody ever bothered you. My first job was at Cinderella Laundry mat in the summer of 73 and I got off at 10:00PM. I would walk in there and find my friends. But the hell with that locked in the trunk shit.

Before we ever moved to the Heights when very little we would always go to A&W across the street because it was cheaper to eat there than the Drive-In. I remember parents buying us slow-pokes or black-cows. Probably figured that should occupy our mouths for at least an hour. LOL

Also remember the Drive -In on Telegraph at W. Chicago. That one had a choo-choo-train. They turned that one into Korvette's.

When we lived on the East Side of Detroit we went to one on Gratiot and one on Harper.

We had fun when we were little. These kids now rent movies out of a vending machine. No wonder they're so screwed up. Spoiled brats that certainly wouldn't endure sweat from the heat of the summer or mosquito's.

Remember them driving up and down spraying what looked like a ball of dust for them?

Ahhhh the good ole days!

Oh yes...I tried to explain to my daughter what a "Drive-in" movie was, and she laughed! I remember sneaking in a few times. One of my funniest memories was when there was a car load of us and about four people in the trunk. We pulled all the way to the back and let them out. My mom was laughing so hard, she had taken my younger brothers to the movies and she saw us. We all had to hear the lecture on how dangerous it was to have people in the trunk and all the what if's; there was an accident...they all could have been killed etc.....Miss the old days.

dearborn drive-in theater

I think most people tried to at least once go under the fence by the Wellever playground. A lot of folks just sat on the playground and watched the old "B" movies. The drive-in was always packed on the weekends as the entrance line of cars were sometimes backed up to Beech Daly. Cheapest date and motel around. A sack of Brays burgers and a couple of bottles of Boones Farm, $2 ticket price. What else did you need but a clean backseat. I started working there the year before I could even drive and it was a great job. Just had to lock up at night and knock on the misty windows of the cars that were either asleep or just into something that they hadn't finished. That was fun and adventurous. During the showing of the movies it was my job to sit in a car and watch the exit for anybody sneaking in. I never caught anybody so to speak. What did they expect for a $1.45 an hour? Ever wonder why a lot of people sat and hung out at the refreshment stand? People that sneaked in. Sure do miss the old drive-in movie picture shows. Johnny Yuhas.

Yep, definitely a juke box in the cafeteria that sat next to one of the columns near the Gymnasium, but on the cafeteria side, of course. Randy Edwards was quite instrumental in keeping the quarters flowing along with his friends and we heard Baba O'Reilly and Pinball Wizzard, Black Dog, Stairway to Heaven and The Levy over and over and over. I sat with Rhonda and the girls and Randy hung with Mike, Doug, Darryl, Ron (Fred), Danny and several others. We had a lot of good memories, but the best thing is finding those individual friends and getting together. I hope to get with Rhonda soon and go see Mom Edwards. So... I will most likely also see Randy, Greg and Bobbi too. It's been way too many years.

As far as Stanley, I had him believing my name was Alice Cooper for several weeks and one day he called me by my name and stopped me dead in my tracks! There he stood with his copy of the year book. That poor man, how did he put up with us for so many years. Even after he knew my name I still went off campus, but... we were all a bunch of little rebels back then. School was a great time in many ways, but I wouldn't want to do it again. I went through it all over with my daughter. Things are getting crazy in schools.

Hi Dave,

Is this the one you were thinking of?.....The 'play' was a take off the Johnny Carson show.....Mike Nagy was Johnny, Bill Parker was Ed McMahan, and I was Doc Severesin, complete with sequened coat...

It was a lot of sketches and 'guest interviews'....with a cast of characters.....it was a lot of fun....no script, just everyone doing their thing.....it was so much fun we were asked to do it again another weekend....

The band was made up of underclassmen....but, I can't remember everyone that was there....but, we were all 'primed'....
