John was my best friend and it is tragic we lost him so young. After high school we went to college together at Hope and then worked together at Blue Cross. We also married girls from work who were friends so our lifes were interwoven on many levels. Miss him deeply to this day! Bill V. F.
Johnny Pink was my first love back at Howard Elementary. He probably would not have given that a second thought. It's sad that many of our classmates are gone.
John and I roomed together our freshman year at Michigan. The two of us were crammed into a "single" in East Quad, and later had the opportunity to move to a triple with another fellow. In those tight quarters you really get to know someone--John was wonderful and I know we also drove each other crazy on occasion. (Somehow he always got the bottom bunk, too.) I can still remember wondering where I put my "Bates Floaters", the winter boot you just had to have in '66-'67, and then finding John strolling down the hallway in T-shirt, cutoffs, and...my Bates Floaters. But having been raised right--NO SOX!! I'm sure I'm not the only one who was in total awe of our NINE letter man: football, basketball and baseball. We had some great times with Barney, our RA, and our blind 60 year old hallway neighbor working on his second or third PhD. John struggled with health issues that year, but never stopped being the great guy and great friend I will always remember. I miss you, John.
Remember friend John often. Especially when watching the Super Bowl, because we watched the first one in the den of his house on Waverly street and I always remember that when they tee it up. John's dad, a stern -- but fair and compassionate -- taskmaster, would look in periodically to see what was going on. But I think he was preoccupied writing-up plays he hoped John could run on the gridiron, hardcourt or baseball diamond. John was smart, funny, kind, and tough, as I found out when he easily wrestled my lanky ass right off the mat in junior high. A great guy.
