Carl Still alerted me to this obituary. I don't remember Tommy but thought you might like to have this. Best--Gene Obituary for Thomas "Tommy" Floyd Johnson September 28, 1940 - April 25, 2019 Thomas "Tommy" Floyd Johnson, 78, of Owens Cross Roads, AL, passed away peacefully on Thursday, April 25, 2019 surrounded by his loving family. Tommy was born on September 28, 1940 in North Cross Roads, MS (Tishomingo Co.) to cotton farmers Albert Tyler and Vedie Smith Johnson. He graduated from Decatur High School in 1959. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy on the USS Assurance 1960-62 in Panama City, FL where he met his future wife Patsy Lea Bewley of Birmingham, AL, and also served at Byrd Station in Antarctica from 1962-63. Tommy and Patsy married in December 1963 and made their home in Huntsville, AL. Tommy’s first job in Huntsville was as a cashier at the commissary on the Redstone Arsenal. He quickly transferred to work as a clerk in a warehouse and then as production controller in an instrument repair shop. He soon earned a position as a Logistics Management Specialist with U.S. Army Missile Command. Tommy thrived on identifying suggestions that would improve processes and save money. From 1968-93 he was recognized for 12 Value Engineering/Suggestion Awards that represented savings to the U.S. Government of over $3.720 million dollars. He had a distinguished 34-year career that included many missile systems/subsystems. Tommy was skilled at shopping grocery sales, couponing and rebates. He was an avid gardener and would grow and then can or freeze the majority of vegetables for his family. When his children were young he enjoyed softball, fishing, hunting and spending time with his family on his parents’ retirement home outside Corinth, MS on the land that his grandparents had once farmed. He was a yarn-spinning story teller and jokester. In retirement he entertained his grandkids with stories in his office, (Tommy’s version of a man-cave), and tended to his many birdhouses, vegetable garden, and acreage. Tommy was a loving Papa cherished by his grandchildren and great grandchild. He was preceded in death by his parents and infant sister Dortha Ree. Left to cherish his memory are his loving children: Pam Hudson (Mark) of Fort Worth, TX, Jill Steelman (Terry) of New Hope, and Michael Thomas Johnson (Betina) of New Hope; and his grandchildren: Andrew Hudson, Kaylea Hudson, Timothy Steelman (Bre), Jeremiah Steelman (Shelby), Rachel Grace Steelman, Sarah Steelman, Houston Johnson (Michelle), Austin Johnson, and Amber Coburn (Jeremy); and his great grandchild River Murdock Steelman; sister Helen Dooley of Melbourne, FL and brother Jerry Johnson of Corinth, MS; and many nieces and nephews.
