Carl was a wonderful friend over the years, and his passing is a tremendous loss to me.  Of all my DHS classmates, he and I maintained the closest ties over the years.  DHS band and noon "study" halls in the band room, giving us the chance to make daily trips to Gibson's or Penn's, were a highlight of our high school years.  Our many football trips as members of Alabama's "Million Dollar Band" were also a hoot, with our freshman year trip to Philadelphia (and side trip to the "Big Apple") for the Liberty Bowl a favorite, followed closely by our junior year trek to Miami for the Orange Bowl. I was in his wedding and he in mine.  When Mary Alice, the children, and I made trips to Alabama to see our folks, Sarah and Cole loved to go swimming in "Uncle" Carl's pool at his lovely home outside Decatur.  In later years, we enjoyed seeing Carl and Beverly at class reunions and visiting their Huntsville home, where we marveled at mementos and photographs from their many world travels.  Carl and I also talked regularly by phone, and I was so glad to see him one last time on our visit to Alabama this past September.  He was such a loving husband and caregiver to his beloved Beverly that I know he must now be with the angels.  In fact, he no doubt has already suggested a friendly poker game with some of the other angels--and we know who will win!
