Sammy Stone was one of the smartest, friendliest, nicest, and certainly the best behaved boys at good old Gordon-Bibb School.

Gordon-Bibb had a 6th Grade Glee Club, and of course, Sammy was one of our stars. When we moved on to DHS, if my memory is correct, he was the only one of us to be selected for the DHS Glee Club as a 7th Grader.

I had no contact with Sammy after graduation except at one of the reunions, but I have fond memories of our grammar  school years. RFA

I am feeling sad about hearing that our Sammy has gone to be with the angels. He was a great guy, and classmate. He would do anything for you. I remember spending time with him at his home at our 50th reunion. He was so gracious, and welcoming. "Go rest high on that mountain, your time on Earth is done. Go to Heaven a shouting, love for the Father and the son."

Most of our classmates are in their 80s now, so we will be saying goodbye more often. Take care of yourselves, stay healthy, and Sammy would say, eat lots of shrimp and grits.

DECATUR — Samuel Thomas Stone, age 80, died on October 23, 2021, from complications of Parkinson’s Disease. Sammy was born November 12, 1940, to William G. “Bill” and Alberta Stone in Decatur, Alabama.

He graduated from Decatur High School as a Merit Scholar Finalist and from Tulane University where he studied architecture and business. After college, he returned to Decatur to join his family for a career at Stone Lumber Company, which was founded by his grandfather in 1931 on the banks of the Tennessee River.

Sammy’s true lifelong passions were his home and gardens, where he created a truly magical and welcoming place for friends and family to gather every weekend over many decades for lively conversation, music, and libations. Anyone who knew Sammy loved him and enjoyed being in his contented company.

He was predeceased by his parents. He is survived by his brother, William G. Stone, Jr. (Suzanne) and his sister, Mary Anne Nyquist (Steven); nephews, Will Stone, Jack Stone (Tara), Jonathan Nyquist (Rich), and nieces, Mary Carol McDaniel (Frank) and Kate Nyquist. He is also survived by five great-nephews and nieces, many cousins, and a host of devoted friends.

Sammy will be greatly missed.

VERY SAD TO HEAR OF SAMMYS PASSING. HE BLESSED MANY BY BEING THEIR FRIEND. I GUESS MY FAVORITE MEMORY WAS THE CATERED BREAKFAST THAT HE HAD FOR OUR CLASS AT HIS HOME. IT WAS SUCH A WONDERFUL MORNING ENJOYING BEING TOGETHER. SAMMY WAS A NICE GUY AND WAS KIND MAN

Sammy was a unique combination and was part of our life journey. Our familys were part of the Decatur business scene and interacted long before we spent those 12 years leading to graduation from DHS. His residence went fom a small "cabin" to an estate which he shared with his two "redheads" and many including our class reunion at one time. His passing leaves another place vacent in our hearts.
