Eddie was one of our most popular classmates for a number of reasons. He never met a stranger, he was always happy and quick with a smile or a joke. Eddie was the best example of happy-go-lucky I ever knew. He was a Gordon-Bibber from the first grade on and we shared teachers for 5 of those six years. He lived on Fourth Avenue a few doors down from Lynn Hayes Haygood while I lived over on Third.
During recess during Fifth grade one of our favorite games for the boys was "run 'till you're tackled." We used an old football for this sport. Eddie was faster than most of us, except Hugh of course, and he would run forever. When he did not have the ball he would run you down and gleefully "smear' you, snach the ball away, and take off himself, which was the purpose of the game.
He was good looking and in previous years, i.e. Third grade, when the girls chased the boys on the playground he was always thier favorite target, next to Hugh of course.
Eddie played Half-back on Coach Ogle's football team in high school and was a two-year starter as I recall, again faster than anyone except Hugh.
At the reunions I was able to attend he was the life of the party. We will all miss him and his entertainment, even if it was somewhat Potty oriented. Yes Eddie, I sit down too. RFA
