I REMEMBER JEWEL BEING A VERY QUITE PERSON SHE HAD THE SWEETEST SMILE AND WAS SUCH A BLESSING TO MANY OF US. THE LAST TIME THAT I SAW JEWEL WAS IN A ROOM ON THIRD FLOOR OF DECATUR GENERAL. SHE WAS SO ILL THAT SHE NEVER KNEW THE TIMES THAT I WENT TO CHECK ON HER.HER HUSBAND WAS ALWAYS AT HER SIDE, SOMETIMES READING THE BIBLE TO HER.SOMEHOW, EVEN THOUGHT SHE DIDN'T SEEM TO KNOW ANYTHING, I BELIEVE SHE HEARD HIM READING THE WORD TO HER,THUS FEELING NOT ONLY HIS LOVE FOR HER BUT OF GOD'S GREAT LOVE FOR HER . I HAD A LOT OF RESPECT FOR JEWEL. SHE MINISTERED TO THOSE AROUND HER EVEN IN HER SICKNESS. DOUGLAS ANN LIVINGSTON
Jewell Duncan was a very special person. I lived on 7th S. E. and she lived on 8th S. E. We would ride to school together. Her Dad or mine would take us and then we would usually walk home together. Even from Gordon Bibb. We left Somerville Road School and went to Gordon Bibb for the sixth grade. She was always sweet and kind. She married Ronald Matthews and had three children, I think maybe four. She was the first girl to die from the class of l959. I believe. She was a very good person and her family was special to me too. She had an older sister,Pat and a younger brother Jimmy. We use to walk down to Delano Park together and go in the wading pool. That felt good on a hot summer afternoon. And we both loved the big slide.
