Asa L. "Buddy" Payne VIEW PROFILE

Funeral for Asa L. "Buddy" Payne Jr., 47, of Route 4 Decatur will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at Shelton Funeral Home with the Rev. Jack Freeman and Dr. W. J. Johnson officiating.

Burial will be in Roselawn Gardens of Memory. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 9 at the funeral home.

Mr. Payne died Tuesday at his residence. He was a member of Shoal Creek Baptist Church and worked for Fluor-Daniel Construction Co. for 17 years as a construction manager.

He is survived by his wife, Sandra Payne; three daughters, Beth Robie, Asa Blankenship and Jennifer Johnson, all of Decatur; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Asa L. Payne Sr. of Decatur; two sisters Lillie Smith and Betty Brothers, both of Decatur; and three grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Robert Milam, James Seibert, Leon Pridmore, Billy Joe Pridmore, Clint Stone and James Boutwell.

I don't think I ever had any classes with Buddy,except maybe PE. Buddy was a great basketball player, and he and Hugh Ogle were the the heart of DHS basketball for several years. I know he lettered at least 2 years, maybe 3. I'm not sure where Buddy attended grammar school; I only remember him from DHS. He was a good sport and a good man. RFA
