SANFORD - Derek Wade "Diamond Derek" Smith, 43, of Sanford passed away on Tuesday, August 6, 2013. Born in Lenoir County on June 13, 1970, he was the son of Judith Deaver Smith of Deep Run and William Clark and wife Sandra of Wilson. Derek was an avid Yankees fan, earning him the nickname of "Diamond Derek." In addition to his parents, he is survived by his daughter, Alyssa Raigan of the home; sister Angela Smith Foster and husband Vernon, of Kinston; and nephew, Quinton Foster of Kinston. The family will receive friends at 10 a.m. Saturday, August 10, 2013, at Howard-Carter Funeral Home and other times at the home of his sister. Funeral services will begin at 11 a.m. with Pastors Steve Dixon and Ray Brown officiating. Burial will follow the funeral service at Gray Branch Church Cemetery in Deep Run, NC.
