Debbie (Karen) Lee (Calkins)

Karen Deborah 'Debbie' Calkins, 49, of Woodbridge Road, died May 28, 2008, at Florida Hospital-DeLand. Mrs. Calkins was a manager. Earlier, she was a field inspector for a nuclear-power plant in Fort Pierce, worked for Omni Corp. in construction in Washington, D.C., worked for the City of Cape May, N.J., and worked for the Pinellas County Public Housing Authority, where she ran a family self-sufficiency program. Born in Brunswick, Ga., she returned to this area 11 years ago from St. Petersburg. She was crowned Miss Volusia County Fair in 1976, was a 1977 graduate of DeLand High School, and received a degree in public housing from Rutgers University in New Jersey. Mrs. Calkins enjoyed gardening and spending time with friends, but her true passion was working with the homeless and underprivileged. She was preceded in death by one brother, Jeffrey Brent Lee. She is survived by her husband of 10 years, William 'Bill'; one son, Steven Lee Anderson of DeLand; her parents, Robert Edward Lee of Daytona Beach, and Carolee Morris of DeLand; one brother, Robert Scott Lee of McKinney, Texas; and one sister, Linda Lee Younk of DeLand.
