To my old friend Robert Hill. We met in 10th grade almost 40 years ago, when we were just 15. Robert had the easy charm of a southern gentleman even at that age. I remember the first day I met him through my good friend Errol, I think we were out at The Pond. I liked him immediately. It was like we'd been old friends for years. I don't ever remember not having a good time around him. He always had that good natured half smile, and those intelligent eyes looking at you when you were talking to him like you were both in on an inside joke (which a lot of times you were). He always had a good joke or story to tell, and always wanted to hear one, and was always easy to laugh. I don't know any of the guys who knew him who didn't like him a lot. He was one of the boys, but didn't seem to give a damn about what people thought about him. He had shorter hair, when long hair was cool, but he seemed cooler than everyone else anyway, without even trying. As my brother Larry says, he had the manner of a 50's movie star, sort of like our own James Dean. He was so attractive to women, without seeming to make any effort, that it would have been annoying if it had been anyone else but Robert. But because it was Robert we were just proud of him. Everybody I know from those days has a Robert Hill story to tell. Even amongst his friends, Robert went his own way, but he was always glad to have you come along with him and share some laughs. I wish I could share one of those times with him again.

Robert and I went through naval basic training together and I owe him a debt of gratitude. I was struggling to pass the physical training (PT) run time requirement. I had actually failed my first try at the the final mile and a half run and if I failed it a second time, I would've been held back. He told me to follow him and keep focused on just keeping up with him and I passed the final run and graduated boot camp on time. //Kevin

In high school is where I met Robert. He always had a nice story to tell and was quiet but when he spoke you knew you wanted to hear what he had to say. He was a kind and friendly man. May you rest in peace, you're in the best hands possible now. God has other plans for you now. Condolensces to your wife and family, hope your hearts are healing now. It was a pleasure to know Robert.

My heartfelt condolences to Robert's family.  While I know there are no words to ease the pain of your loss, I hope the many wonderful memories and the knowledge that he was a friend to all at DeLand High School and that he will continue to be thought of by many as a kind heart, with a great sense of humor who made many high school days an adventure well remembered.

Sincere sympathies to Robert's family.  I have such good memories of him coming over to the Calkins House on Michigan Avenue for some rougher than normal afternoon of football.  Everyone was always welcome to join in a game.  I know that he is in a better place but the loss is still so sad.  Thoughts and prayers to his family in this difficult time.

I met Robert in 9th Grade.  There will ALWAYS be a special place in my heart for him.  So many memories, such a special friendship. I could listen to Robert talk for hours, so soft spoken & that accent ... ♥️

May you rest in peace,  my friend.
