In Memory

Robert Michael Dooley

Robert Michael Dooley, 59 Robert Michael Dooley passed away on October 16th, 2012. Robert, known as Mike, was born on July 11th, 1953. Mike attended Drake University to earn a BA in history. He loved to read about history and he often used it to make sense of the world. He loved his horse Rosemary. He was a storyteller and made everyone around him laugh. He never spoke out of anger and hardly ever raised his voice. His sudden and early passing will leave a void in many lives, but memories of him will serve to fill that hole with joy and laughter. He is survived by his mother Jane; his sister Diane; his wife Sharon; his three daughters Brooke, Kara, and Alex; his two sons Nate and Joe; and six grandchildren. An informal gathering will be held in celebration of his life at the Solon Station Bar in Solon, IA on October 22nd beginning at 4 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made out to the Community Mental Health Center for Mid-Eastern Iowa.

He only went by Mike. He was a very clever writer. He wrote a parody of 3 of our most notorious teachers at Franklin for a 9th grade English class assignment, that I still remember elements of today: Cecil Bench (kind of a stiff) "Cecilian Benchhook", Carol Thune(super uptight math teacher) "Thunesian Spoonbill", and Irwin Kaworsky (PE 'teacher')' but I don't remember what Kaworsky's name was transformed into. Mike made Kaworsky into a monkey for the thing he wrote. The teacher, Mrs. Dorothy Brinkman (nice lady) wouldn't let Mike read it aloud in class since it was just too spot-on about her colleagues. We bugged Mike after class and we all read it then. Thune squawked "Double 5! Double 5!" in it. Mike was VERY clever.
