This Memorial Day and as the 30th High School reunion approaches I wish to remember William Patrick Healey.
Bill was a wonderful friend to me during and after high school. We shared a lot of knuckleheaded moments (he used to punctuate my mistakes with comments like, "Perry I realize you were born on probation...") but most importantly we shared a true friendship. Bill was an expert welder, a trade he learned from his father. After graduation when I went in the Marine Corps we'd often catch up via letters or when I was home on leave. Despite the fact that he had a solid job, I wasn't surprised by his enlistment in the Marine Corps a few years after mine. And, like everything he did in life, from motocross to welding, Bill pursued his military occupation with reckless passion... It was no surprise that he would end up serving in the 1st Reconnaissance Battalion, 1st Marine Divison out of Camp Pendelton. Bill was "Force Recon" the Marine Corps version of the Navy SEALs, or Army Green Berets. He died in November of 1987 while serving his country.
