Obituary for James H. Winter, Class of 1958

James Harold Winter passed away peacefully on Friday, November 9, 2018, surrounded by loved ones. He was born in Detroit on June 19, 1940 and was a proud graduate of Mackenzie High School. Predeceasing Jim were his parents Harold Winter and Marion (McPhail) Winter, his brother Gary Winter, and his wife of 50 years, Mary Anne (Oberst) Winter. He leaves behind a brother Robert K. Winter, a son Robert J. Winter, daughter-in-law Monica Winter, grandchildren Hadley Winter and Griffin Winter, as well as a number of uncles, cousins, nephews and nieces. 


Jim was a successful hotelier, who managed hotels in many exciting places, including Detroit, Boston, and Chicago. He was President of Select Community Management, which he co-founded in Ann Arbor in 1986.


Jim was a lifelong golf enthusiast and music lover. He was also an avid sports fan, rooting for the Detroit pro teams and the University of Michigan. He and wife Mary Anne enjoyed world travel. 


Jim was known to his many acquaintances as gregarious and charming, with a great sense of humor. Those closest to him knew him also to be kind, peaceful, and generous.
