Nancy Mabel Sanders (84) passed away peacefully in her sleep on February 5, 2022. Since 2019 she was a resident of McCrite Plaza skilled care and previously Riverstone Independent Living from 2013 - 2019 in Kansas City, MO. She was born March 1937, in Detroit, Michigan and was a graduate of Mackenzie High School. Previously, she raised her family of two children and three stepchildren in Troy, Michigan, residing there from 1965 until 2013. She was predeceased by her father Walter Morrison (2003) and mother Florence (2009) and is survived by a brother Walter "Bud" Morrison, Jr. Nancy is also survived by stepchildren David Sanders (Madison Heights, MI), Kathryn Canty (New York, NY), Robert Sanders (Leland, NC) and children Paul Sanders, PhD (Kansas City, MO) and COL Gail Yoshitani, PhD (West Point, NY) in addition to eleven grandchildren.
Nancy lived an active and fulfilling life. Among her many interests, she was a talented craftsperson including stained glass, some of which is displayed publicly, sewing, cross-stitching, quilting, knitting, and crocheting. She was also exceptionally talented in the kitchen and even published her own cookbook! She and her late husband John were prolific travelers. They proudly visited all fifty states, most Canadian provinces and nearly as many foreign countries on six continents. They made long term friends with many people they met on these journeys. John and Nancy met at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Detroit in the early 1960's and were married on June 27, 1964. They later moved to Troy, MI and attended University Presbyterian Church in Rochester Hills, MI for nearly fifty years. This is where many of Nancy's handmade leaded glass windows are displayed. Together they enjoyed the lifelong friends they had from the "Potluck Club" and Nancy's "Girl's Club."
Nancy's jobs included working for General Motors as a young, single woman and then working as an administrative assistant for the doctors at Beaumont Hospital's Neuroeducation Center in Royal Oak, MI. We did not perceive it at the time, but she pioneered telework in the early '70s when she was allowed to bring a large electric typewriter home. She typed at the speed of light transcribing medical dictation. Nancy was also very generous with her time and volunteered her services to the school and across the community.
The family would like to acknowledge the many people who helped care for her directly in recent years. This includes the staff at Riverstone (2013 - 2019), Senior Helpers, and McCrite Plaza (2019-2022). Finally, per her wishes, her ashes will be interred at Great Lakes National Cemetery in Holly, Michigan alongside her late husband of 53 years John Eaton Stanley Sanders who passed away on April 24, 2018. There will be no immediate funeral service; however, a memorial service will be conducted later.
